Its murders and disturbing imagery deepen the mood around an investigation; the core experience remains a deliberately paced detective adventure. In Nintendo Life’s review of the European version, PJ O’Reilly praised the story, characters and art while criticizing frustrating mechanics and the lack of English voicework, awarding it 7/10.
What kind of game is Emio?
Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club is a Nintendo Switch entry in Nintendo’s text-based adventure series. Players see events from the protagonist’s perspective and work with colleagues at a detective agency to solve a case. Nintendo’s developer interview describes the format and identifies Emio as a new story in the franchise.

The darker subject matter is the change in emphasis, not a wholesale change in genre. Nintendo Life’s review describes a mix of cartoon-like visuals, innocuous-sounding music and grim events. That contrast contributes to the unease, while the investigation and story progression remain central.
Is Emio actually scary?
It can be unsettling, particularly when the titular figure appears, but the available review does not characterize it as especially frightening. O’Reilly notes murdered teenagers and disturbing imagery, yet says that during his playthrough the game was not particularly scary. That is one critic’s experience, not a universal measure of how players will react.

Expect a story-led mystery with horror-inflected subject matter and atmosphere, rather than a game built around survival, combat or sustained scares. The distinction matters if the marketing hook has led you to expect a conventional horror game.
Where did the Smiling Man idea come from?
Producer Yoshio Sakamoto told Nintendo that the initial image behind the story was a dead victim with a paper bag over their head. He had been carrying the idea for some time and told assistant producer Kaori Miyachi he was thinking of a story called “Emio,” or “smiling man.” That creator account explains the premise’s origin without giving away the full plot. What works, and what may frustrate you?
Nintendo Life’s 7/10 (“Good”) assessment is a single reviewer’s judgment. Its praise centers on the story, likeable characters and art style, including the game’s unusual local characters and humor. Its reservations focus on the interaction: core mechanics can be frustrating, the experience feels insufficiently modernized, and there is no English voicework.
| Consideration | What the review indicates |
|---|---|
| Story and characters | Praised by Nintendo Life. |
| Atmosphere and scares | Unsettling imagery and subject matter, but not particularly frightening during the reviewer’s playthrough. |
| Interaction and pacing | Slow pacing and frustrating mechanics may test your patience. |
| Voicework | No English voicework, according to the review. |
The practical choice is whether the mystery and cast are appealing enough to carry you through a slower text-adventure structure. If you prefer active play or streamlined interactions, the friction O’Reilly describes may matter more than the story’s darker tone.

Do you need to play the earlier games first?
Nintendo’s two earlier Famicom Detective Club stories—The Missing Heir and PART II: The Girl Who Stands Behind—received Switch remakes in 2021, as noted in its series interview. Emio is presented as a new entry. The available sources do not establish that either remake is required before playing it, so treat them as optional series context rather than prerequisites.
Nintendo’s stated intention is to welcome both newcomers and longtime fans: assistant producer Kaori Miyachi said, “We hope everyone will enjoy the game at their own pace, whether they’re playing Famicom Detective Club for the first time or are long-time fans of the series.” That expresses the team’s aim, not a guarantee that every player will find the systems friction-free. The earlier games are there if you want more of the series’ investigative style.

How does the story work as a game?
Sakamoto described the design challenge as creating the “logic” that makes the story function interactively: “The first essential step is to create what we call the ‘logic,’ in other words, the gameplay mechanism that makes the story work as a game.” The comment helps explain why Emio is not simply a dark story presented as a film: progress depends on the structure of a detective adventure. Whether that structure feels satisfying or frustrating is one of the main questions raised by the review.
How long is Emio?
The sources cited here do not give a verified completion time. The review discussion includes the question, “How long is this one though?”, but that question is not evidence of a playtime figure. Your pace through a text-led investigation may also differ, so there is no supported number to promise.
