What happened in the Instagram post?
On March 30, 2016, Ratajkowski and Kardashian posted the same topless selfie on their Instagram accounts. The image showed both women raising their middle fingers. TIME reported the post and reproduced Ratajkowski’s caption: “We are more than just our bodies, but that doesn’t mean we have to be shamed for them or our sexuality.” TIME’s contemporaneous report documents the date, participants and caption.
Why did Ratajkowski take the selfie with Kardashian?
In a July 7, 2016 interview with Naomi Wolf, Ratajkowski said she had tweeted in support of Kardashian after the earlier selfie drew backlash. Kardashian sent her flowers; later, they ran into each other and came up with the image together. Ratajkowski described it as intentional and lighthearted, and said she wanted to make clear that Kardashian did not deserve the criticism. Her Harper’s BAZAAR interview gives her account. ELLE’s account of the interview also notes that it was not a planned meeting or photo shoot.
What message did Ratajkowski say the image conveyed?
Ratajkowski framed the selfie as a response to the judgment directed at Kardashian, and more broadly to the policing of women’s bodies and sexuality. In the Harper’s BAZAAR interview, she described taking a selfie as a way to “reclaim the gaze”: the person in the image looks at herself while also looking back at the audience. She added that Kardashian was free to do what she wanted.

Lina Esco, founder of Free the Nipple, praised the post as an expression of women taking control of their bodies. She also objected to the black bars used to cover the women’s breasts in the image’s presentation. TIME quoted Esco saying, “Whenever women take control over their bodies in any format or context, it’s a powerful statement.” TIME’s interview with Esco records her reaction.

Whether the original Instagram post remains available today has not been established. The date, caption and context here are based on contemporaneous reporting and Ratajkowski’s later explanation, rather than a claim that the post can still be verified in its original form.
