In July 2024, she wrote, “I disowned him, not the other way around.” Her explanation describes more than one disagreement: she has said Musk was absent for much of her childhood and harassed her for her femininity and queerness when he was around. Musk has publicly offered a different account, centered on his claim that he was misled when he consented to gender-related care. The reasons and history should be understood as competing personal accounts, not as a single independently established explanation.
What Wilson says led to the estrangement
In a July 2024 response to Musk’s public remarks about her, Wilson disputed the idea that he had ended the relationship. “I disowned him, not the other way around,” she wrote, as reported by TheWrap.
Wilson’s account points to a longer rupture. She said Musk did not know what she was like as a child because “he quite simply wasn’t there.” She also said that during the time he was present, he “relentlessly harassed” her for her femininity and queerness. Those are Wilson’s descriptions of their relationship, rather than findings independently established by the cited reporting. The Washington Post and TheWrap reported her statements in July 2024.
In a March 2025 interview with Teen Vogue, Wilson spoke about the distance between them and said, “I’m not giving anyone that space in my mind.” The interview presents her perspective on the estrangement, not a precise date when all contact ended. Teen Vogue’s feature also discusses her public profile and advocacy.

What Musk has said—and how it differs
Musk has described the situation differently. In remarks reported by The Washington Post in July 2024, he said he had been “tricked” into consenting to gender-affirming care and said he had “lost” his child. These are Musk’s claims and framing; they do not establish Wilson’s motives or independently resolve the history of their relationship.
The accounts emphasize different things. Wilson has described absence and how she says she was treated; Musk has focused publicly on consent to gender-related care and his sense of loss. Neither account should be presented as a neutral, complete record of the other person’s experience.

How the public timeline developed
- 2020: Wilson has said she came out as transgender and became financially independent from Musk that year. In a 2025 interview, she said she had not spoken with him for months when she needed parental consent for testosterone blockers and hormone replacement therapy. Teen Vogue reported these details.
- 2022: Wilson filed a petition to change her legal name. Teen Vogue reported that the filing said she did not “wish to be related to [her] biological father in any way, shape or form.” That wording is reported by the outlet; it is not presented here as a quotation checked against the court document.
- 2023: Walter Isaacson’s biography of Musk contributed to the public narrative about Wilson. Teen Vogue says the book portrayed her as angry and rebellious, a characterization Wilson contested. A biography’s portrayal is not Wilson’s own account.
- July 2024: After Musk discussed Wilson in an interview with Jordan Peterson and described her as “dead — killed by the woke mind virus,” Wilson publicly challenged his version of their relationship. The Washington Post and TheWrap reported her response.
- March and September 2025: Wilson discussed the estrangement and her public life in interviews with Teen Vogue. A separate September 2025 report said she was living with roommates, considering community college, and had said she had no inheritance. Teen Vogue reported those statements.
Estrangement is not the same as a financial cutoff
Wilson has said she has been financially independent from Musk since 2020. Teen Vogue also reported in September 2025 that she told The Cut she had no inheritance. These statements are attributed to Wilson; the cited coverage does not establish the details of any financial arrangements between them. It would therefore be inaccurate to turn the estrangement into a claim that Musk financially cut her off.

Wilson’s clearest public statement is that she chose to disown her father. Her explanation includes her account of his absence and his treatment of her femininity and queerness, alongside the conflict around her gender identity and care. Musk disputes her framing and has spoken about feeling misled and losing his child. Public reporting does not establish one definitive motive or a verified date when their relationship ended.
