Elon Musk said Tesla fired a Tommy gun’s drum magazine into a Cybertruck’s driver door and that no bullets entered the passenger compartment. That is Musk’s claim, reported on October 20, 2023—not an independently verified finding that the Cybertruck, or the vehicle as a whole, is bulletproof.

The claim followed a post from Tesla Owners Silicon Valley showing a Cybertruck with visible marks on its driver side. Musk replied: “We emptied the entire drum magazine of a Tommy gun into the driver door Al Capone style. No bullets penetrated into the passenger compartment.” Electrek reproduced the statement in its October 20, 2023 report.

The Joe Rogan Experience transcript adds interview context: Musk said Tesla planned to show a video of firing a magazine from a Tommy gun into the vehicle, and discussed glass protection separately. Does this prove the Cybertruck is bulletproof?
No. The statement concerns a claimed test of one area—the driver door—and Musk’s assertion that bullets did not enter the passenger compartment. It does not establish protection across the whole vehicle or against all ammunition. The cited reporting does not show that the windows were shot at; Electrek and Carscoops both distinguish the apparent body-panel test from the glass. Carscoops’ account.

Nor do the reports establish a formal ballistic protection rating for the prototype. A single claimed demonstration is not equivalent to a standardized evaluation: ammunition, projectile specifications, firing distance, test conditions, and the part of the vehicle tested all affect what a result means. What the reporting leaves unconfirmed
- Ammunition: Carscoops reported that neither Musk nor Tesla had identified the rounds used. The reporting does not verify a round count, ammunition load, or the magazine’s contents.
- Test setup: The cited accounts do not establish the firing distance, protocol, or other conditions needed to reproduce or evaluate the claim.
- Coverage: Musk’s statement names the driver door and passenger compartment. It does not establish how other body panels, windows, or vehicle versions would perform.
- Independent verification: The cited material documents Musk’s statement and interview remarks, not an independent ballistic test or standardized rating.
How to compare vehicle-protection claims
A meaningful comparison needs more than a weapon name or a headline. Look for the tested area, ammunition and projectile specification, distance and firing conditions, vehicle version, independent verification, and any recognized protection rating. Because the reporting of this demonstration leaves several of those details unspecified, it cannot support a like-for-like comparison with other vehicle-protection claims.
