In a July 2024 interview, Vivian Jenna Wilson said her father, Elon Musk, had criticized her femininity during childhood and described one memory as “cruel.” She spoke after Musk publicly said he had been “tricked” into authorizing care related to her transition. Wilson disputed that account. The interview documents two sharply different public accounts; the reports cited here do not independently establish what happened in private or resolve the disagreement over consent.
Why Vivian Wilson spoke publicly
NBC News published Wilson’s first public interview on July 25, 2024. It followed Musk’s appearance in an interview with Jordan Peterson, where he discussed Wilson’s transition, said he had been “tricked” into authorizing care when she was 16, and referred to her by her birth name and with male pronouns. The Washington Post’s contemporaneous account describes the remarks and the timeline.
Wilson said she wanted to challenge Musk’s version rather than let it stand unanswered. In the interview, as quoted by Futurism and Fortune, she said: “I think he was under the assumption that I wasn’t going to say anything and I would just let this go, unchallenged.”
What Wilson said about her childhood
Wilson described Musk as an absent father and said that, when he was around, he criticized her femininity. Fortune reported her estimate that he was present “maybe 10% of the time.” That figure is Wilson’s personal estimate in an interview, not an independently measured statistic.

She also recalled being yelled at during a road trip in fourth grade because her voice was high. Wilson called the experience “cruel,” according to the interview excerpts reported by Futurism and Fortune. These are her recollections of private family events; the cited reporting does not independently verify them.
How Wilson disputed Musk’s account of consent
Musk said he had been “essentially tricked into signing documents for one of my older boys” and that he had “lost my son, essentially,” as quoted in contemporaneous coverage. Wilson rejected the suggestion that he had been deceived. She said: “He was not by any means tricked. He knew the full side effects.” She also said he reviewed the documents more than once.

The two accounts conflict. Wilson’s statements describe her understanding of what Musk knew and did; Musk’s public remarks describe his own. The reviewed reports do not independently establish what either person understood at the time or settle the dispute.
What was already on the public record
Wilson’s 2024 interview came after a legal step she had taken two years earlier. The Washington Post reported that she filed a petition in California Superior Court in April 2022 to change her name and stated that she did not wish to be related to her biological father. The filing establishes that she sought the change; it does not, by itself, verify later accounts of their private relationship.

What the interview establishes—and what it does not
- Wilson publicly challenged Musk’s remarks about her transition and his claim that he had been tricked into authorizing care.
- She described childhood criticism of her femininity, recalled a fourth-grade road-trip incident, and characterized the treatment as cruel.
- Musk’s comments and Wilson’s response are public statements by the people involved. The cited coverage does not independently adjudicate their private recollections or resolve their disagreement.
The interview was about a family dispute and public claims concerning Wilson’s transition; it is not medical guidance. Futurism and Fortune reproduced the quotations above while reporting on NBC News’s interview.
