Their scale is cosmic, but they are not the same kind of being.
What is the difference between the Celestials and Galactus?
| Comparison | Celestials | Galactus |
|---|---|---|
| Number | A group of powerful extraterrestrial beings. | One character: Galan, transformed into Galactus. |
| Origin | Associated with major events in the history of life and evolutionary changes. | A survivor of the universe that existed before the Big Bang; he was born Galan on the planet Taa. |
| Defining role | Intervention in the development of life, including the origins of the Eternals and Deviants. | Consuming planets for sustenance. |
| Connection to other characters | Closely connected to the Eternals’ origins. | Uses Heralds to search for planets and recurs in Fantastic Four stories. |
Marvel’s cosmic guide describes the Celestials’ evolutionary interventions and Galactus’s origin and role. The Fantastic Four team history places both kinds of cosmic threats in the team’s stories, but their shared scale does not make them equivalent.
What do the Celestials do?
Marvel describes the Celestials as powerful extraterrestrial beings whose actions shaped the history of life. Its guide says their interventions triggered evolutionary reactions that produced the Eternals and Deviants. Their stories therefore tend to concern origins, evolution, and large-scale judgments rather than a single recurring need to consume worlds.
That connection is central to the Eternals’ place in Marvel lore: the Celestials are their creators in the account summarized by Marvel’s guide. It is a collective role, not the biography of one individual.

Who is Galactus, and why does he consume planets?
Marvel’s account identifies Galactus as the last survivor of the universe before the Big Bang. He began as Galan on Taa; after the prior cosmos approached its end, he emerged as the Devourer of Worlds. His defining function is survival through planetary consumption, not the creation of a people or an evolutionary lineage.
Galactus sends Heralds to locate worlds and empowers them with the Power Cosmic. Marvel’s Heralds of Galactus guide summarizes that relationship: Heralds serve as scouts, receiving power from Galactus. This makes them part of how his hunger reaches other worlds, not a counterpart to the Celestials as a group.

Are the Celestials more powerful than Galactus?
There is no universal ranking established by the cited Marvel guides. They support a comparison of origin and narrative role, not a continuity-wide rule that every Celestial outranks Galactus or that Galactus always defeats them. Marvel notes a storyline in which Galactus assists against a Celestial threat, but that particular conflict does not establish an absolute power scale. The answer depends on the specific comic and its context.

Their first appearances are useful publication-history markers, not dates in Marvel’s fictional chronology: Marvel lists Eternals (1976) #2 as the Celestials’ first appearance and Fantastic Four (1961) #48 as Galactus’s. The latter begins the famous “Coming of Galactus” story, with Fantastic Four #50 also included in Marvel’s suggested reading path. See Marvel’s Galactic Empires guide for those references.
