Elon Musk has said he underwent two neck surgeries after a bone spur pressed into his spinal cord. He described a C5-C6 disc procedure in a post dated October 17, 2020; a later report, citing Walter Isaacson’s biography, linked the injury to a 2013 sumo match. Those are distinct accounts: Musk discussed the surgery, while the party story is a biographical report.
What Musk said about the surgery
TechTimes reproduced a post attributed to Musk and dated October 17, 2020. He wrote: “Had Mobi-C disc put in at C5-C6, however 1st surgery failed to remove bone spur sticking into my spinal cord.” In the same account, he said a second surgery addressed the spur. TechTimes’ report is the source consulted for the post; this is Musk’s public description, not a review of medical records.
How the scar became a talking point
Viewers noticed the scar during Musk’s April 17, 2023 appearance on Tucker Carlson Tonight. Contemporary coverage focused on the visible mark and viewers’ questions. The interview’s reported subject matter included artificial intelligence, rather than an explanation of the scar; the reviewed coverage does not show Musk discussing it on air. The Recent Times’ coverage reported the viewer reaction, while The Washington Post’s interview coverage provides context for the broadcast.
What a later report says caused the injury
In an October 8, 2024 article, ComingSoon attributed the injury to a 2013 sumo match at a Japanese-themed birthday party, citing Walter Isaacson’s biography of Musk. That is a reported biographical account of how the injury happened, not an independently verified clinical history. It is compatible with Musk’s account of later surgery, but it is a different kind of evidence. ComingSoon’s account identifies the biography as its basis.

What can—and cannot—be concluded
The surgery history Musk described offers a straightforward explanation for why he has a neck scar. The available accounts do not establish the exact date the scar formed, the surgical technique used, or a medical assessment of the scar itself. The sumo-match story should therefore be treated as a biography-based explanation of the injury, not as a documented diagnosis or operative record.
