Palmer Luckey says a recent text exchange with Elon Musk turned to the Black Eyed Peas’ “Let’s Get It Started” and its earlier title, “Let’s Get Retarded.” But the messages themselves have not been published, and the available account does not establish exactly what Musk said. The song’s award record and 2004 promotion history are clearer than the private conversation—and they complicate Luckey’s telling.
What did Luckey say he and Musk discussed?
In a March 18, 2025 report, Futurism’s Noor Al-Sibai described Luckey’s remarks on the Wall Street Journal’s What’s News podcast. Luckey said he and Musk text fairly regularly, while expressing uncertainty about whether Musk would consider him a friend. He identified their most recent exchange as a discussion about the Black Eyed Peas song and the idea that people remember an earlier version being replaced. Futurism reported Luckey’s account; it did not publish a transcript of the messages.
Luckey was quoted as saying: “The last thing we were talking about was the fact that the Black Eyed Peas’ Grammy-winning song, ‘Let’s Get Retarded,’ has been taken off every single music platform.” He then called “Let’s Get It Started” “the child-safe version” used for children’s sports games. Those are Luckey’s descriptions, not independently verified details of the exchange or a catalog audit.
Which title actually won the Grammy?
The Recording Academy’s official record lists “Let’s Get It Started” as the Black Eyed Peas’ winner for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group in the 2005 Grammy cycle. The record also specifies the cycle’s recording eligibility period. It does not list the award-winning track under “Let’s Get Retarded.” The Academy’s award record is the direct reference for the winning title.

Why were there two titles?
Contemporaneous coverage in April 2004 reported that the group rewrote “Let’s Get Retarded” as “Let’s Get It Started” for NBA playoff promotions. The Washington Post’s report supports the connection between the revised title and the basketball campaign. It establishes that promotional context, not every subsequent change to album listings, catalogs, or streaming services.

Not much can be established about Musk’s character from this account alone. Luckey’s story may suggest a conversation about cultural memory and a song’s changed title, but the source does not say who started the exchange, reproduce the full wording, or identify Musk’s precise contribution. It therefore cannot show whether Musk agreed with Luckey, challenged him, or simply took part in the discussion.

The more defensible observation is about the limits of the anecdote: a private exchange is being interpreted through one participant’s brief public retelling. Any conclusion about Musk’s motives, views, or character goes beyond what that account demonstrates. The verifiable record corrects the Grammy-title claim; it does not fill in the missing texts.
