The sandwich most consistently described as Elvis Presley’s favorite was peanut butter and banana on white bread, fried in butter. Bacon belongs to many modern “Elvis” recipes, but accounts of the simpler sandwich do not make it a universal ingredient. It is also easy to confuse both with the much larger Fool’s Gold Loaf, a separate peanut-butter, jelly and bacon sandwich associated with a Denver restaurant.
What was Elvis Presley’s favorite sandwich?
In reporting on Presley’s food, the basic version is peanut butter and sliced banana between two pieces of white bread, fried in butter. KQED’s 2013 feature describes that preparation, as does Garden & Gun’s account of the sandwich tradition. KQED’s account and Garden & Gun’s account do not establish bacon as a required ingredient in this simpler sandwich.
Did Elvis’s peanut butter and banana sandwich have bacon?
Bacon appears in many contemporary recipes called “Elvis” sandwiches, but the name covers variations rather than one firmly established recipe. Epicurious’s 2017 version layers creamy peanut butter, sliced banana, bacon and honey on banana bread, then grills the sandwich in bacon fat. That distinction matters: the simplest historical description is peanut butter and banana, fried in butter; a bacon-inclusive recipe is a variation. The available accounts do not establish one definitive household recipe with every ingredient or quantity.

How to make a bacon-inclusive Elvis-style sandwich
Epicurious’s 2017 recipe offers a practical single-sandwich version. Its measurements and method are recipe instructions, not a verified Presley family recipe.
- 2 slices banana bread
- 1 tablespoon creamy peanut butter for each slice
- Half a banana, sliced
- 1 teaspoon honey
- 2 slices thick-cut bacon
- Cook the bacon in a large, heavy skillet until crisp. Leave about 1 tablespoon of bacon fat in the pan.
- Spread peanut butter on the banana bread. Add the sliced banana and honey, then close the sandwich.
- Griddle the sandwich, covered, over medium-low heat until golden, about 2 minutes per side.
This recipe uses banana bread and bacon fat, unlike the simpler white-bread sandwich fried in butter. A heavy skillet is convenient for cooking the bacon and grilling the sandwich, but no special equipment is required.

What is the Fool’s Gold Loaf?
The Fool’s Gold Loaf is a separate, much larger sandwich associated with the Colorado Mine Company near Denver. Accounts describe a hollowed loaf of bread filled with peanut butter, jelly or preserves, and bacon. The versions cited here do not include banana. Denver Westword’s 2012 interview with Nick Andurlakis recounts that he and colleagues devised the item as an unusual menu offering. He explained the thinking this way: “We had steak and lobster,” Andurlakis says, “but we had nothing ‘fun’ on the menu.” Westword’s interview gives his account of how the sandwich came about.
Garden & Gun’s 2013 version uses a French white loaf, bacon, smooth peanut butter and grape jelly. It calls for browning and hollowing the buttered loaf, filling it with the spreads and crisp bacon, then closing and slicing it. The recipe’s playful claim that it serves 8–10 regular people or one Elvis is not nutritional guidance. Garden & Gun’s recipe gives the full ingredient list and method.

The reported Denver trip—and what is known
Andurlakis recalled Presley visiting the Colorado Mine Company after a concert and ordering the Fool’s Gold Loaf after Andurlakis recommended it, knowing Presley liked peanut butter, jelly and banana sandwiches. He also recounted a later visit involving sandwiches delivered at the airport. Colorado Public Radio’s 2022 retrospective describes a February 1976 flight from Memphis for more sandwiches, while Garden & Gun also retells Andurlakis’s memory of the encounter. These are reported recollections, not independently confirmed details of every date, route, order or person involved. Colorado Public Radio’s retrospective recounts the story.

There is no established canonical calorie count in the cited accounts. KQED reported estimates of 8,000 calories, attributed to writer Graeme Wood, and another estimate as high as 42,000. Those are reported estimates, not verified nutrition analyses; the sources do not provide an authoritative calorie figure. KQED discusses the differing estimates.
