Ella Purnell once felt that being liked was essential to her career. Playing Jackie in Yellowjackets helped her see that an actor can do meaningful work without making universal approval the goal. As she put it in a 2024 interview, “It’s not your job to make stuff people like.”
What did Ella Purnell think was essential to her career?
Being liked—and, more specifically, appearing likable. In a Collider Ladies Night conversation with interviewer Perri Nemiroff, published by Filmibee on April 15, 2024, Purnell named the pressure simply: “Being liked.” She described realizing that making work is her job; ensuring that everyone likes it is not.

That is a shift in how she thinks about audience approval, not a rejection of acting or craft. Purnell said she wants to make work whether or not audiences like it, and values roles that challenge her and leave her proud of what she has done.
How did playing Jackie in Yellowjackets change her perspective?
Purnell worried viewers might dislike Jackie, the character she played in Yellowjackets. Instead, Jackie became a fan favorite. That experience helped Purnell feel freer to pursue roles that excite her, including playing a villain, rather than treating likability as a requirement for choosing or performing a part.

The distinction matters: the story is not that Purnell stopped caring what audiences think, or that criticism cannot affect her. It is that she has tried to separate the work she makes from her ability to control every response to it.
What does Purnell consider a satisfying career?
She describes contentment as doing challenging work she can be proud of, while also making room for family, friends, and a fuller life beyond work. In the interview, she admits she has not yet figured out how to balance those parts of life. Her answer is personal rather than a formula for success: acclaim or universal approval is not the only measure she wants to use.

Purnell’s comments sit within a career that has involved uncertainty as well as ambition. In an October 5, 2024 Guardian profile, she recalled considering a pause from acting at 18 so she could attend university and write. She deferred that plan after getting a role in Tim Burton’s Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, and later moved to New York for Sweetbitter. That account shows evolving priorities, not regret about becoming an actor.
The Guardian also reported that Fallout drew 65 million viewers in its first 16 days of release, and described the show’s effect on Purnell’s visibility as disorienting. That reported audience figure provides context for the scale of her profile; it does not explain her view of approval, which she discussed in the separate Yellowjackets-centered interview.

In a 2024 Vogue interview, Purnell called an acting career “a marathon, not a sprint” and spoke about goals centered on personal growth and challenge. She also discussed serving as executive producer on Sweetpea, contributing to character design and creative decisions. Her work has therefore expanded beyond performing, even as she describes success in terms broader than public response.
A Spotlight interview adds that Purnell began performing as a child and did not attend drama school. She has described drama school as a personal choice, not a universal requirement, and has spoken about questioning as a teenager whether acting was still her priority. Together, those accounts suggest a career shaped by choices and changing aims—not a single fixed definition of success.
