Ella Emhoff has publicly described tattoos as part of her personal style and a broader journey toward confidence. Reported designs include her dog’s name, flowers, a salmon, and a large swan back piece—but the sources do not establish a personal meaning for each image.
Which tattoos have been reported?
In January 2021, British Vogue described hand-drawn stick-and-poke tattoos visible on Emhoff’s Instagram, including her dog’s name and a flower. In a Garage interview, Emhoff reportedly said she began tattooing herself during quarantine. Later accounts of that interview also list a small flower and a salmon with a flower hanging from its mouth. Those descriptions were relayed by Women’s Health and Distractify; the Garage interview itself is not the source directly available in those reports.
Other coverage has described playful designs including a cow, a birthday cake, and eggs and bacon. These are reported examples, not a complete or independently verified inventory. The available accounts describe the images but do not say what they represent to Emhoff.
The salmon tattoo
Secondary reports quote Emhoff describing her first larger tattoo as “a salmon fish with a flower hanging out of its mouth.” The wording comes from her Garage interview as relayed by Women’s Health and Distractify. She described the design, but those accounts do not give its personal symbolism.

The swan back piece
In September 2025, Parade reported on a large, shaded black-and-white back piece centered on a swan and credited tattoo artist Ruby May Quilter. That report does not explain what the swan means to Emhoff.
What has Emhoff said the tattoos mean?
Emhoff has connected tattoos to her appearance and confidence in a general sense, rather than offering a key to interpret each motif. In a December 2023 interview covered by The Washington Post, she reflected on tattoos and body hair as part of reclaiming confidence in a fashion industry that can press people toward a generic image. She said: “All of my life, I had really low self-esteem and self-confidence, so this kind of felt like a way for me to take that back.”
Rank #2
That statement describes her relationship to her appearance and confidence overall. It does not identify the dog’s name, flowers, salmon, cow, food designs, or swan as symbols of a particular person, event, or belief. Assigning those meanings would go beyond what she has publicly explained in the cited accounts.

There is no verified current census in the cited coverage, and the estimate has changed over time. Women’s Health and Distractify relayed an estimate of around 18 in 2021, attributed to Emhoff in an interview with The New York Times. Parade described her as having “20-ish” in 2025 while reporting on the newer back piece. Both figures are approximate and date-specific, not a precise present-day count.
