Yet in a 1987 interview, Taylor said she was still “madly in love” with Burton on the day he died. Her many weddings do not erase that testimony: she said she believed each marriage would last, while her later comments and her son’s recollection offer different pieces of context—not a single, complete explanation of her private life.
What Taylor said about loving Burton
In an interview published by Vogue in October 1987, Taylor described a bond that outlasted their marriages: “I loved him for twenty-five years. We had a unique relationship. I was still madly in love with him the day he died and—he loved his wife—but I think he still loved me, too.”
This is Taylor’s account of her own feelings, and her own qualified view of Burton’s. It does not establish what Burton privately felt; Taylor said she thought he still loved her. The interview’s wording answers the apparent contradiction directly: divorce and remarriage did not, in Taylor’s telling, end her love for him.
How many times did Elizabeth Taylor marry Richard Burton?
Taylor and Burton met while co-starring in Cleopatra. They married for the first time on March 15, 1964, divorced in 1974, remarried in 1975, and divorced again in 1976, according to Biography.com’s retrospective timeline and Taylor’s Vogue interview. The relationship drew intense public attention.

Taylor had eight weddings to seven men overall; Burton was the man she married twice, according to TIME. The wedding count describes her marital history, not how she felt about each person or why a particular marriage ended.
What Taylor said about her marriages before Burton
Before Burton, Taylor married Mike Todd, who later died in a plane crash, and then Eddie Fisher. In the Vogue interview, she said: “Every time I married, I thought it would be forever, but I have no idea why I married Eddie.” She also recalled that she and Fisher talked about Todd and described marrying Fisher as “a way of keeping Mike alive.”
In a separate 1993 interview with the Los Angeles Times, Taylor summarized the change in her own words: “Then I culminated it all by leaving Eddie and falling madly in love with Richard.” These remarks show how she later described her choices and feelings; they do not explain every marriage or establish a complete cause for the decisions she made.
How her son remembered the relationship
In a 2024 Guardian interview, Taylor’s son Christopher Wilding offered a family member’s retrospective perspective: “Her love for Richard never went away. It was an ill-fated relationship, but neither one lost their love for the other.” That is Wilding’s recollection, distinct from Taylor’s first-person interviews; it should not be treated as Burton’s own testimony.

The clearest answer comes from keeping the evidence in its proper categories:
- Taylor’s testimony: She said she loved Burton for decades and was still in love with him when he died.
- The marriage record: They married and divorced twice; Taylor had eight weddings to seven men.
- Her son’s recollection: Wilding later said her love for Burton never went away.
Together, these accounts explain why the headline can sound contradictory without proving that Taylor was insincere in other relationships. She said she expected each marriage to last, and she separately described her enduring love for Burton. Calling Burton “the love of her life” is an interpretation of those statements, not a measurable fact or a label that settles every part of her romantic history.
