Eminem said he skipped the 2003 Oscars because he did not expect to win and felt the ceremony might not understand him. Nearly 17 years later, he reconsidered: after missing the chance to perform “Lose Yourself” when it won, he thought it could be cool to do it at the 2020 ceremony.
Why Eminem did not attend the 2003 Oscars
“Lose Yourself,” from the film 8 Mile, won the Academy Award for Original Song at the 75th Oscars in 2003. Eminem was not at the ceremony. In a Variety interview, as quoted by Good Morning America, he recalled not expecting to win and being unsure why he was nominated in the first place.

He described the Oscars as a “vacuum” from his childhood perspective, saying, “I remember being kinda confused about why I was even up for one, because as a kid with the Oscars, it was like a vacuum.” He also had recently performed the song at the Grammys, according to Variety.
What changed by the 2020 ceremony
On February 9, 2020, Eminem made a surprise appearance at the 92nd Academy Awards and performed “Lose Yourself.” The Academy’s Oscars coverage places the performance nearly 17 years after the song’s win.

His explanation was retrospective, not a reported change in the invitation or its terms. As Good Morning America quoted the Variety interview, Eminem said: “I kinda figured maybe since I didn’t get a chance to do it at the time, maybe it would be cool.” The chance to perform the song after missing its Oscar-night moment was the appeal.
