What did Priscilla Presley say about Elvis?
In a 2002 Dateline interview, Priscilla agreed when Katie Couric described Elvis as controlling. She also spoke about his influence over her clothing: “He didn’t like prints on me. He didn’t like stripes. He didn’t like boldness. He said I was petite and that was taking away from my looks.”
Asked about his control, she added: “Well, I mean, he was, but you know, as controlling as he was, he was very, very charming.” Her comments capture both sides of the relationship as she described it: she acknowledged the control while also recalling Elvis’s appeal. What does Elvis and Me recount?
Priscilla wrote the 1985 memoir with Sandra Harmon. In a 2023 account of the book, TIME describes passages in which Priscilla recalled Elvis throwing objects, including a chair after she criticized one of his songs. The memoir also portrays changes in his moods and behavior that she experienced as emotionally manipulative. TIME also reports that Priscilla described a 1972 Las Vegas hotel encounter as forceful and unwanted. That is a serious allegation from her memoir and should be understood as her account; the reporting cited here does not independently corroborate the episode. The same article says she recalled Elvis offering her “white pills” when she was a teenager to help her stay awake. Priscilla wrote that he believed he was helping her and did not think the pills could harm either of them. The account does not establish what the pills were, and it should not be used to infer a specific drug or diagnosis.
How did their relationship begin and end?
Priscilla was 14 and Elvis was 24 when they met in West Germany in 1959. She later moved to Memphis as a teenager. They married in 1967, when she was 21, and their daughter, Lisa Marie Presley, was born in 1968. They separated in 1972 and divorced in 1973. How much does the film tell us about the real relationship?
Coppola’s 2023 film Priscilla drew on the memoir, but a dramatization is not independent evidence for the events it depicts. The Associated Press reported that Coppola wanted to prioritize Priscilla’s perspective while resisting pressure to remove negative material about Elvis. She also said, “I really didn’t want to make him a villain,” explaining that she wanted to show him as human. Those are the director’s comments about her filmmaking choices, not first-person testimony about the historical events. The Associated Press report discusses the film and Coppola’s approach.
For readers asking what Priscilla revealed, the clearest answer is what she herself said in interviews and wrote in her memoir: she described Elvis as controlling, recalled volatile episodes, and also remembered his charm and her continuing love for him. Keeping those recollections distinct from later reporting and cinematic interpretation makes for a more accurate account than treating the film—or any single summary—as a complete record of their marriage.
