George Wendt, Ozzy Osbourne and Malcolm-Jamal Warner were among the television figures remembered during the 77th Emmy Awards’ In Memoriam segment on September 14, 2025. Phylicia Rashad opened the tribute with words about her former Cosby Show co-star Warner, and Vince Gill and Lainey Wilson performed “Go Rest High on That Mountain” as the montage played.
How the 2025 Emmys In Memoriam unfolded
The ceremony took place at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. The Television Academy announced the musical tribute two days beforehand, naming Gill and Wilson as performers of Gill’s “Go Rest High on That Mountain.” The Academy’s September 12 announcement previewed the performance.
The Los Angeles Times reported that the segment began with Warner. Rashad, who played his mother on The Cosby Show, spoke before the montage. “He was a beloved teenager in an iconic television series who the world watched grow into manhood,” she said, adding that Warner and the colleagues lost in the past year “remain in our hearts.” The Los Angeles Times report says Warner played Theo Huxtable for eight seasons and died in July 2025, aged 54.
Gill and Wilson then performed while images of actors and other television professionals appeared. The Associated Press and the Los Angeles Times both describe the musical performance and montage.
