Stone connected the scenes to Bella’s experience
In a 2023 New York Times interview, Stone said Bella has no shame about her body or sexuality. She described the scenes as part of Bella’s exploration and growth, and said her aim was to remain true to Bella’s experience.

That framing helps explain why the sex is so prominent in the film: it is one of the ways the story shows Bella encountering the world and learning what she wants. It is an artistic rationale grounded in Stone’s understanding of the character, rather than a claim that every viewer will interpret the scenes in the same way.
How the production handled intimate scenes
Stone credited intimacy coordinator Elle McAlpine with helping create a calmer, more professional environment. In a 2024 Fresh Air interview, Stone said McAlpine’s presence felt like “both a safety net and a choreographer and a handhold.” She also said she did not view having an intimacy coordinator as a choice anymore, describing the working relationship as meaningful.

Stone told the Times that the group present for the scenes was deliberately small. She named director Yorgos Lanthimos, cinematographer Robbie Ryan, first assistant director Hayley Williams and focus puller Olga Abramson, in addition to the actor involved. Her account describes a defined on-set group alongside the coordinator’s support, rather than an open-ended crew.
Lanthimos said Stone helped shape the scenes
Lanthimos separately described the creative collaboration. In an Irish Times interview, he said he and Stone planned different styles for some of the scenes and that Stone came up with many of the ideas they used. That is Lanthimos’s account of her input; it complements, but is distinct from, Stone’s own explanation of Bella’s perspective.

Why the film’s sexual content has prompted debate
The film’s frank sexual material has been polarizing, and reactions to on-screen sex can turn on how viewers understand a character’s agency, the story’s tone and the filmmaking choices. Stone’s comments explain her approach to Bella; they do not settle those broader debates.
In reporting on the film, The Guardian interviewed McAlpine about the work and reported that a scene involving a father and his sons was changed for the UK release before the film received an 18 classification there. That release detail applies to the UK; it should not be treated as a description of cuts or ratings in every territory. The Guardian also reported McAlpine’s account that the Brave New World orgy sequence involved 120 performers and took two days to film.

Poor Things is based on Alasdair Gray’s novel of the same name. The book offers a way to explore the story’s source beyond the film, while Stone’s interviews focus on how she approached Bella and the production’s intimate scenes.
