Colbert was a presenter, not the host; his first-time Outstanding Talk Series win for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert—announced weeks after CBS said the program would end—gave the ceremony a moment of genuine poignancy. That does not make every part of the broadcast work, but it explains why Colbert seemed to steal a show that needed a reason to feel consequential.
Colbert’s win gave the night its emotional center
The Television Academy’s official winners list records The Late Show with Stephen Colbert as the winner of Outstanding Talk Series. It was the program’s first win in the category. Colbert was among the presenters at the September 14, 2025 ceremony, according to the Academy’s event announcement.

The timing made the award feel like more than a career honor. CBS had announced in July that it would end The Late Show. AP reported that Colbert received major ovations both when he first appeared onstage and when he accepted the award, and described him as perhaps the night’s most popular winner. His response captured the mixture of gratitude and loss: “Sometimes you only truly know how much you love something when you get a sense that you might be losing it.” (Associated Press.)
That is the sense in which Colbert stole the show: not by literally hosting it or dominating every segment, but by supplying a moment with stakes the ceremony’s planned bits could not manufacture. The show had a host and a format; Colbert’s win gave it a human story.

Who hosted the 2025 Emmys?
Nate Bargatze hosted the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards on September 14, 2025, at the Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles. CBS broadcast the ceremony live. It recognized television from the 2024–2025 season, as the Academy’s announcement specified. Colbert was a presenter and winner, not the host.
Bargatze’s comedy included a short-speech conceit: speakers were encouraged to keep their acceptance remarks brief. The device gave the broadcast a recurring premise, but it could also make the speeches themselves feel like obstacles to the joke. In The Atlantic, one critic framed the night as “Nate Bargatze Had One Joke” and argued that the conceit did not make the awards fun; the review singled out Colbert’s emotional remarks as one of the evening’s rare sincere moments (The Atlantic). That is one critic’s assessment, not a consensus verdict, but it points to the broadcast’s central tension: the most affecting moment arrived when the show stopped trying to turn every beat into a joke.
What else mattered among the 2025 Emmy winners?
Colbert’s moment was not the only consequential result. The top series awards also gave the ceremony a few clear narratives:
- Comedy: The Studio won Outstanding Comedy Series. AP reported that it finished the season with 13 Emmys, four of them won by Seth Rogen on the main ceremony night.
- Drama: The Pitt won Outstanding Drama Series, and Noah Wyle won lead actor in a drama. AP described the result as a meaningful upset in a field where Severance had looked likely to sweep the leading drama awards.
- Limited series: Adolescence led the limited-series results, with 15-year-old Owen Cooper among its notable winners.
The Academy’s winner database provides the official category names and results. Together, these awards meant the ceremony had more than one story to tell: a comedy-series breakthrough, a drama upset, a dominant limited-series showing, and the farewell-shadowed talk-show win.
Why was Colbert’s Emmy win so charged?
The cancellation made the award especially resonant, but its cause should be described carefully. CBS’s public explanation, reproduced by TIME, called the decision “purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night” and said it was not related to the show’s performance, content, or other matters at Paramount (TIME).
AP reported that some people interpreted the end of the show as punishment or political accommodation after Colbert criticized a Paramount settlement involving President Donald Trump. Network executives characterized the choice as strictly financial. Those interpretations are part of the public debate, not proof of CBS’s private motive. Colbert’s own remarks gave the moment a political edge as well as a personal one: TIME reported that he told the audience, “In September 2025, my friends, I have never loved my country more desperately.”
The combination—not a confirmed explanation for the cancellation—is what gave the award its charge. A presenter whose program was nearing its end received a major industry honor while the circumstances of that ending were being publicly argued over.

The Academy reported that the telecast averaged 7.42 million viewers, using Nielsen time-adjusted Live+SD fast national data that included out-of-home viewing for September 14, 2025. It called the result an 8% increase over the 2024 ABC telecast and the most-watched Emmys since the previous CBS ceremony in 2021. Those are audience measures, not a verdict on the broadcast’s comic or artistic success (Television Academy ratings release).

In the same release, the Academy said Paramount+ live streaming was up 76% compared with the 2021 CBS-hosted Emmys. That comparison is to the previous CBS-hosted ceremony, not to 2024. It also reported 60.9 billion potential social impressions and 1.6 million mentions; “potential impressions” is the Academy’s reported metric, not a count of verified unique viewers.
AP also reported 7.42 million viewers, comparing it with 6.87 million for the 2024 broadcast and noting that the 2025 figure was more than 70% above the January 2024 low of 4.3 million. The rebound shows that more people watched than in those comparisons. It cannot establish that the show was funnier, more affecting, or better paced. The most defensible critical verdict is narrower: the ceremony had an audience and some consequential results, while Colbert supplied the emotional beat that made its stakes feel clearest.
Can you watch the full 2025 Emmy ceremony now?
The Academy said the full telecast was available on demand through Paramount+ through September 21, 2025. That access window has passed; the announcement does not establish whether the ceremony is currently available there or on another service. The event was broadcast live on CBS, but no current replay availability is confirmed by the cited sources.
