The finished film does show her cast the spell and disappear from family photographs; what a later scene reference describes as cut or extended is the fuller, more intimate goodbye around it. Calling it Emma Watson’s “most heart-wrenching” moment is an interpretation, not a verified quote or ranking from Watson.
What happens when Hermione erases her parents’ memories?
As the danger to the wizarding world grows, Hermione chooses to protect her Muggle parents by removing their memories of her and sending them away under new identities. The decision lets her join Harry’s mission while reducing the risk that her parents will be targeted because of her.
The emotional force comes from the cost: Hermione is not simply leaving home. She is making herself absent from the family life her parents remember. A 2011 retrospective praised the film’s opening sequence as a particularly moving Watson performance, but that is a critic’s assessment, not an objective ranking or a statement by Watson. The Hollywood News retrospective offers that critical response.
Was Hermione’s goodbye to her parents cut from the movie?
Not entirely. The released film includes Hermione casting the memory spell and the visual of her being removed from family photographs. The distinction is between that brief version and additional goodbye material described as deleted or extended.

The Harry Potter Database’s 2024 scene reference describes a longer passage that includes Hermione looking at her mother’s shadow, a quiet exchange with her parents, her goodbye, the spell, and her disappearance from the photographs. This is a secondary reference; it does not establish that the complete passage is included on any particular commercially available edition.
Did Emma Watson call it her most heart-wrenching Harry Potter moment?
The available interviews cited here do not show Watson describing the parents sequence as her “most heart-wrenching” Harry Potter moment. Treat that phrase as a way to characterize the scene’s emotional impact, not as her own superlative.

Watson’s November 2010 ComingSoon.net interview discusses other scenes, including the tent dance with Harry. Her comment “It’s not fixed” refers to the ambiguity of that dance, not to Hermione’s goodbye to her parents.

They are separate moments in Deathly Hallows: Part 1. The parents passage is about Hermione’s choice to protect her family and leave them behind. The later Malfoy Manor sequence shows Hermione being tortured.

Director David Yates’s account of letting the camera run for four or five minutes while Watson and Helena Bonham Carter improvised concerns the torture scene. In a November 2010 Fandango interview, Yates said, “I didn’t shoot it like a scene where you [say] action and cut.” That description should not be used as evidence that the parents goodbye was removed because it was too emotional.
