Emma Thompson and Greg Wise met while working on Sense and Sensibility, and married in 2003 after dating for eight years, according to The Independent. Thompson has said it was not love at first sight; the film became an important part of a difficult period in her life.
How did Emma Thompson and Greg Wise meet?
They met during production of Sense and Sensibility, the 1995 film adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel. Thompson wrote the screenplay and played Elinor Dashwood. In a 2013 BAFTA interview, she discussed adapting the novel, developing the screenplay and taking the role.
Their first meeting on set preceded the film’s release. A 2008 Guardian profile quoted a diary entry by Thompson dated April 30, 1994, noting Wise’s arrival on set. The film came out in 1995; the release year is not the year they met.
Was it love at first sight?
No, Thompson has said. Asked by Parade whether it was love at first sight, she replied, “No, not at all. You want that, don’t you? Sorry.” She described herself as unhappy at the time and said writing and filming the movie helped her “come alive again.” She also said, “And then Greg [Wise] rescued me out of that depression in many ways.” These are Thompson’s retrospective descriptions of that period, not a complete account of either person’s private life.

When did they get married?
Thompson and Wise married in 2003, after eight years of dating, The Independent reported in 2020. In a 2014 Guardian interview, Thompson said they had been married for 19 years. That was her reported duration at the time of that interview, not a current count.
What is the story about a psychic prediction?
Thompson recounted an amusing prediction on The Graham Norton Show, as reported by The Independent: a friend with psychic abilities told Wise he would meet the love of his life. In Thompson’s version, Wise thought the prediction might refer to Kate Winslet, and Thompson also recalled having a bad date with Winslet. The Independent reported a separate version from Wise’s earlier Loose Women appearance: “Before I started filming Sense and Sensibility a witchy friend of mine said you are going to meet the love of your life and 25 years later I am still with Em!” Wise’s quoted account did not mention Winslet. The prediction is an anecdote attributed to the couple, not evidence of a verifiable forecast.

How have they described their marriage and work?
Thompson offered one brief reflection on the length of their relationship in the 2014 Guardian interview: “I think the first 20 years are the… bedrock. And then you can start having a good time.” In a 2024 Guardian interview, Wise described how they handle work opportunities: when one of them gets a project they want, they “sit down and work it out… It’s always been like that.” Those comments reveal how they have publicly described their approach; they do not establish what their day-to-day relationship is like.

The distinction matters: describing him as part of the family reflects Thompson’s account, but calling him legally adopted would go beyond what she said.
