Nate Bargatze opened the 77th Emmy Awards as television inventor Philo T. Farnsworth, using a fictional conversation about television’s future to poke fun at the industry and the way people watch stories on their phones. Mikey Day, Bowen Yang and James Austin Johnson joined him in the sketch.
What was the 2025 Emmys opening sketch about?
The fictional sketch imagined Farnsworth and his companions discussing what television might become. Its central joke was the contrast between grand ambitions for television storytelling and the ordinary, distracted ways people consume it now.
As the Associated Press reported, Bargatze, speaking in character, said: “We create a world where the finest artists craft stories of staggering beauty that millions of people will watch on their phones while they’re sitting on the toilet.” Associated Press
Who appeared in the sketch?

Where can you watch the official sketch?
The Television Academy’s “Opening Sketch: 77th Emmy Awards” page is the official destination for the clip. It is distinct from the Academy’s separately titled “Opening Monologue: 77th Emmy Awards” video: the sketch is the Farnsworth bit with the ensemble, while the monologue is Bargatze’s opening remarks as host.

When and where was the ceremony?
The 77th Emmy Awards took place on September 14, 2025, at the Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles. The ceremony, which recognized television programming and individual achievement for the 2024–2025 season, aired live on CBS, with Bargatze as host. Television Academy
A comedy premise, not a history of television
The sketch uses Farnsworth, an inventor associated with television, as a character in a comic imagined scenario. It should not be read as a historical account of how television was invented. The Academy identifies the piece as the opening sketch, and the available reporting describes its premise; neither establishes complete writing credits or a full transcript.
