LIVE in Los Angeles. Vogue and the Los Angeles Times praised several standout looks, while AP’s photo editors curated a gallery of memorable fashion moments. Those selections are editorial judgments—not an official ranking—and the coverage cited here does not establish a sourced worst-dressed list.
How to read the Emmys 2025 fashion picks
“Best” and “worst” are matters of taste, not Emmy categories. Vogue and the Los Angeles Times published their own best-dressed selections; the Associated Press presented a photo-editor-curated gallery of standout moments rather than a poll or ranked scorecard. The examples below distinguish those outlets’ selections from my assessment of what made each look effective—or less successful.
For comparisons, I’m looking at silhouette and construction, color and material, the balance between formal glamour and experimentation, styling and proportion, and whether a look leaves a distinctive visual impression. These are my own reading lenses, not criteria published by the outlets.
Standout looks praised by fashion coverage
Jenna Ortega: jewelry as the statement
Ortega’s Givenchy look was one of the evening’s most striking experiments. Vogue called it avant-garde and highlighted a bodice made from oversized bijoux. The Los Angeles Times described a top made of jewels and pearls paired with a black skirt, placing it in the night’s “naked dress” trend. The contrast between the ornate, exposed-looking top and the restrained skirt gives the outfit a clear focal point: the construction is the spectacle, while the black lower half keeps it legible.

Chloë Sevigny: Old Hollywood, with a turn
Vogue selected Sevigny in Saint Laurent, describing the look as a subversion of Old Hollywood style. Sevigny told Vogue, “I’ve always loved fashion with a point of view—whether it’s referencing the archives, or something more avant-garde.” That comment speaks to her taste; it should not be taken as a fuller explanation of her intention for this particular outfit.
Colman Domingo: expressive tailoring
Vogue highlighted Domingo’s powder-blue Valentino suit with crystal embroidery; the Los Angeles Times described it as a bespoke Valentino suit. The color and embellishment make the tailoring feel celebratory rather than conventional, while the suit’s formal structure keeps the look anchored in red-carpet menswear.

Selena Gomez: a strong color, a clean silhouette
The Los Angeles Times singled out Gomez’s red, high-neck Louis Vuitton gown and noted that she arrived with Benny Blanco. Vogue also selected her Louis Vuitton look and the couple’s appearance. The gown’s saturated color gives it immediate impact; the high neckline offers a more composed counterpoint to the evening’s more revealing or experimental styling.
Other names in the evening’s fashion conversation
Vogue’s selections also included Cate Blanchett in Armani Privé and Sam Nivola in Dior. Its gallery credited Hunter Schafer in McQueen and Lisa in Lever Couture. AP’s curated gallery named Jenna Ortega, Sydney Sweeney, Javier Bardem, and Alan Cumming among the evening’s standout fashion moments, offering a broader photo-led view beyond any one publication’s best-dressed list.

What the “worst dressed” half can—and cannot—say
The cited event coverage supports examples of looks that editors praised or chose to spotlight, but it does not provide an attributable, criteria-based worst-dressed ranking. Calling a particular attendee one of the night’s “worst” as though that were a shared verdict would overstate the evidence. A reader can reasonably dislike a look that another editor finds memorable; that disagreement is part of fashion judgment, not proof of consensus.
On my own criteria, an experimental look risks feeling less successful when its focal point competes with its silhouette or when embellishment obscures the shape of the outfit. That is a general way to assess red-carpet styling, not a claim that a specific attendee was widely judged a fashion failure. The available coverage supports a discussion of standout looks, not a defensible list of named “worst” looks.

The ceremony behind the red carpet
The Television Academy says the 77th ceremony recognized excellence in television programming and individual achievement for the 2024–2025 season. Nate Bargatze hosted, and the CBS broadcast came from the Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles. The telecast presented 26 Emmy categories—a measure of ceremony programming, not a fashion statistic.
