For a more hands-on project, official StarWars.com tutorials show fabric, felt, paper-mache and cardboard builds. Choose based on your available time, materials and tools—and keep cutting, hot glue and spray-paint work adult-led.

Make a quick costume from clothes you have
Jedi: robe, tunic and trousers
Wear a brown bathrobe over a cream shirt or tunic with tan pants. Boots can complete the look, and a lightsaber is optional. The robe-and-neutral-clothes combination does most of the visual work, so it is a practical choice when you have little time or do not want to sew. This outfit is based on StarWars.com’s last-minute costume ideas.
Han Solo: vest and dark trousers
Pair a vest with a white long-sleeve shirt and navy or other dark pants. For a more character-specific detail, attach red ribbon or craft felt along the trouser sides with fabric glue or hot glue. Leave the stripes off if you want to avoid an adhesive step; the vest, shirt and pants still establish the outfit. Jyn Erso: layer a thrifted look
Combine a gray long-sleeve top, black pants, brown vest, gray scarf or fabric, and boots. A thrifted jacket can be adapted into a vest, but that involves cutting, so plan for adult help where needed. The materials and adaptation idea come from StarWars.com’s DIY costume guide.

Try a fabric, felt or cardboard build
Leia on Endor
This outfit uses light-blue leggings and a cotton-twill poncho finished with ribbon trim, paint and a belt. The official tutorial includes cutting and sewing the poncho and hood, along with ironing steps. It also says to allow spray paint to dry for at least 24 hours; treat that as the tutorial’s instruction, and follow the paint product’s own directions as well. See the Leia on Endor directions.
BB-9E
For a droid-inspired costume, the tutorial builds a head from paper-mache over a suitably sized ball or balloon, then adds a foam dome and felt details. It also describes an elastic headband and costume straps. Gather newspaper and glue, craft foam, several colors of felt, elastic and ribbon before starting; hot glue is used for attaching details in the instructions. Gonk
The Gonk build uses utility bins for the body, with a shoebox, flexible aluminum duct, craft foam, elastic and paint among the other materials. The tutorial calls for cutting openings in the bins and sanding them, using a Dremel or jigsaw. It describes a back opening intended to provide ventilation. Because this project involves rigid containers and cutting tools, it is a more involved, adult-led build. Follow the Gonk instructions for the construction details.
Han Solo in Carbonite
A box-based panel costume offers a simpler way to evoke the carbonite scene than making a full outfit. StarWars.com’s tutorial uses clothing and a box, with paper-mache and silver paint to create the effect. See the Han Solo in Carbonite directions.

Keep craft steps appropriate for the wearer
StarWars.com’s 2017 children’s costume article states: “Note: These crafts are for adults only.” Its 2016 last-minute DIY guide says activities should be done with adult supervision. Keep cutting, hot-glue, spray-paint and similar steps adult-led, especially when making a costume for a child. The Gonk tutorial’s cutting and sanding steps are particularly tool-dependent.
