In late September and early October 2025, Elon Musk urged people on X to cancel Netflix, first amid criticism of the animated series Dead End: Paranormal Park and then in posts targeting other shows. Musk framed the campaign as a defense of children, but claims that Netflix promotes a transgender agenda or grooms or sexualizes children were allegations—not findings established by the contemporaneous reporting.
What sparked the calls to cancel Netflix?
The controversy focused initially on Dead End: Paranormal Park, an animated series with a gay and transgender protagonist. TheWrap reported that the show aired two seasons in 2022 and Netflix canceled it in 2023. In October 2025, after the account Libs of TikTok criticized the program, Musk replied, “This is not ok,” according to TheWrap’s October 2, 2025 report.
The dispute also became tied to comments by the show’s creator, Hamish Steele, about British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s condolence message after Charlie Kirk’s death. The Standard reported Steele’s post as saying: “Our sympathy for any of the families being slaughtered by your own weapons but a random Nazi gets shot and it’s a public statement.” That wording is attributed here to The Standard’s contemporaneous account; the post itself was not independently verified in the reporting reviewed. The Standard also reported that Musk reposted another user’s claim that they had canceled Netflix and replied “same.” That account does not independently verify a cancellation by Musk.
How did the campaign broaden?
Vanity Fair reported on October 3 that Musk had spent roughly the previous 48 hours criticizing Netflix to an X audience it put at 227 million followers at the time. On October 1, he posted: “Cancel Netflix for the health of your kids.” Vanity Fair also described posts Musk shared that criticized other programs, including CoComelon, Strawberry Shortcake: Berry in the Big City, and The Baby-Sitters Club. The program references and accusations in those posts were part of the criticism Musk and other accounts amplified; they are not independent evidence of wrongdoing by the shows or Netflix. In this way, the campaign moved from objections to one program and its creator’s reported remarks to a broader attack on Netflix’s children’s and family programming. Musk accused Netflix of promoting a transgender “agenda” and characterized children’s content as sexualized or grooming. Those descriptions are his claims, not factual conclusions established by the cited coverage.

What is documented—and what remains unproven?
- Documented action: Contemporary reports quote Musk urging people to cancel Netflix and describe him amplifying criticism of several shows.
- Allegations: Claims about Netflix’s motives, a coordinated agenda, grooming, or sexualization are attributed to Musk and other critics. The cited reports do not establish them as fact.
- Company response: Vanity Fair said Netflix had not responded to its request for comment by October 3, 2025; TheWrap said Netflix had not immediately responded to its request on October 2. Those dated statements do not establish Netflix’s position after those reports.
- Effect on subscriptions and business: The reviewed coverage does not establish verified cancellation totals or a sustained financial impact caused by the campaign. The Standard reported a roughly 2.34% share-price fall in one trading session and a $1,170.90 close on October 2, 2025, but that observation alone does not show that Musk’s campaign caused the change.
