The wording appears in two separate contexts: one exchange recounted by his lawyer, Matías Morla, and a later interview in which Maradona discussed U.S. influence and Latin American politics.
What did Maradona call Trump?
Maradona used the Spanish word “Chirolita.” In a 2018 interview transcript reproduced by NODAL, the term is glossed parenthetically as “títere,” or puppet. It is best understood as a dismissive comparison, not as an English phrase Maradona himself used. NODAL’s reproduction of the Clarín interview places the remark in a political discussion, rather than as an isolated comment about Trump.
The TeleSUR remark and the reported visa denial
In a report published February 1, 2018, AS USA, citing Télam, relayed Maradona’s lawyer Matías Morla’s account of a TeleSUR interview. Morla said that while they were trying to obtain a U.S. visa, he urged Maradona not to speak about the United States. Morla recalled that, when asked what he thought of Trump, Maradona answered: “Es un Chirolita.” AS USA’s Télam-sourced report gives the Spanish wording and attribution.
The report also said Maradona’s visa application had been denied and that he hoped to travel to Miami for a proceeding involving his former wife, Claudia Villafañe. The explanation that the comment was connected to the denial comes from Morla; the report does not independently establish the U.S. government’s reason. February 1 is the date of the report, not a confirmed date for the original TeleSUR interview.

A separate comment in a Sinaloa interview
In a later 2018 interview conducted in Sinaloa, Mexico, Maradona again referred to Trump as “Chirolita.” The interview, originally published by Clarín and reproduced by NODAL, ranged across Argentine politics and U.S. influence. Asked about being near Trump in Sinaloa, Maradona replied: “Es cierto, pero yo no le tengo miedo. Ni al francotirador (por Kim Jong-un) ni a Chirolita.” In English: “That’s true, but I’m not afraid of him. Neither the sniper [a reference to Kim Jong-un] nor Chirolita.” The reproduced interview preserves the exchange in its political context.
This is a distinct appearance of the nickname, not confirmation of the TeleSUR exchange’s date or circumstances. NODAL dates its reproduction October 1, 2018; the interview is presented as taking place in Sinaloa.

Maradona’s comments on politics and U.S. influence
The Trump remarks sat within broader political commentary. In an April 5, 2018 report, Infobae described a CNN en Español interview with Maradona speaking from Dubai. He criticized Argentine president Mauricio Macri, commented on Brazilian politics, and opposed U.S. influence. Infobae’s account provides that wider context; it is not the source of the specific “Chirolita” wording.
