He wanted to devote his time and energy to Wallows, but he has since clarified that he did not quit acting and would consider the right project.
Why did Dylan Minnette take a break from acting?
In a May 2024 interview on the Zach Sang Show, Minnette said that acting had once felt fun and inspiring, but after years of work it had begun to feel like “just a job.” TheWrap reported that he described himself as fortunate to have found success in acting, while explaining that he wanted to focus on music. TheWrap’s May 27, 2024 report recounts his explanation.
His decision was about changing his priorities, not a claim that acting was a failure or that he regretted his career. He described music as a longstanding passion shared with his bandmates and said he wanted to give Wallows his full time and energy. As he put it, “The only way that’s gonna happen is if I put my 100% time and energy into it and take it very seriously and show the world that we all take this very seriously.”
Why was Wallows the focus?
Minnette wanted to take the band as far as it could go by treating it as a serious commitment. Wallows released its third studio album, Model, on May 24, 2024, according to Rolling Stone Canada. The album’s release provides context for his focus on music at the time; it does not, by itself, explain his decision.

Did Dylan Minnette quit acting permanently?
No. “Quit acting” overstates what Minnette said. In 2024, he left open the possibility of returning when Wallows’ commitments and the timing allowed. In July 2025, he addressed the rumor directly on the podcast Therapuss, saying he had never felt or said that he had quit. Just Jared reported that he still had a desire to act again if the right project came along. Just Jared’s July 5, 2025 report covers that clarification.
That is an openness to a suitable opportunity, not an announcement of a return or a specific acting schedule. His remarks describe his priorities at the time, and do not establish what projects he may take on next.

Was the SAG-AFTRA strike the reason he stopped acting?
No. TheWrap reported that an acting window he had considered overlapped with the SAG-AFTRA strike, which affected timing. Minnette’s stated reason for stepping back, however, was his desire to focus his time and energy on music and Wallows—not the strike.

What his explanation does—and does not—mean
- It does mean: acting had started to feel like work after years of doing it, and he wanted to prioritize a different creative pursuit.
- It does not mean: he announced a permanent retirement, said he would never act again, or attributed his decision to success alone.
