For children ages 2–4, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) names PBS KIDS shows, Sesame Street, Blue’s Clues, and Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood as examples of media that can teach facts, healthy behaviors, and managing emotions. They are starting points, not a ranked list or a guarantee that every episode will benefit every child. What matters is the particular child, the content, and whether a caregiver helps connect viewing to conversation and life off screen.

What educational shows can offer toddlers and preschoolers

The AAP says some children ages 2–4 can understand educational media. At this stage, language is developing quickly, independence is growing, and children are learning to manage strong emotions. A well-chosen program may give a child ideas to talk about or model healthy behavior, but a show is not a substitute for interaction with adults, play, or practice.

The AAP’s examples include PBS KIDS shows, Sesame Street, Blue’s Clues, and Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood. The guidance does not compare these programs, assess individual episodes, or promise a particular learning outcome. Treat the examples as options to explore with your child, rather than a definitive “best shows” ranking. AAP guidance on media for toddlers and preschoolers.

How to choose a show for your child

The AAP’s 5 Cs offer a practical way to think through a viewing choice: child, content, calm, crowding out, and communication. The questions are not a scorecard; they help caregivers notice how media fits into this child’s day.

  • Calm: Is a screen becoming the default way to handle every moment of boredom or distress, or is your child also getting chances to practice other ways to settle?
  • Crowding out: What is viewing replacing—movement, outdoor exploration, books, conversation, or imaginative play?
  • Communication: Can you watch or talk together and connect something on screen to an experience, question, or activity afterward?

For videos on YouTube, the AAP cautions that cartoons and influencers may include marketing or poor role modeling. It advises choosing a high-quality playlist and turning autoplay off. Its 2026 policy summary also recommends platform design protections such as autoplay being off, avoiding targeted advertising to minors, and controls for algorithmic feeds. Make viewing interactive

When practical, watch with your child. Ask what a character is doing, talk about how a character behaves, and respond to questions. The goal is not to quiz a toddler or turn a show into a lesson; it is to make room for the child’s thoughts and help them make sense of what they see.

After an episode, try a related offline activity: act out a helpful behavior, draw a scene, find an object connected to the story, or talk about a feeling the characters experienced. The AAP recommends discussing show or movie content and doing something related together. These steps support shared engagement but do not guarantee a measurable learning result.

Shared reading can extend an idea at the child’s pace. The AAP recommends letting the child set the pace, choosing books they enjoy, and discussing concepts from an educational show. A toddler picture book can be a simple companion, but it need not match every program. AAP guidance on reading with young children.

Keep screens from displacing other learning

Children learn through a mix of experiences, including conversation, books, movement, outdoor exploration, and play. The AAP advises setting aside time each day to play, read, or go outside with a young child. When deciding whether to add an episode, consider what it would take the place of—not just whether the program is labeled educational.

Avoid open access to a phone or tablet for toddlers and preschoolers. A device available at all times can make it harder to keep viewing intentional and to notice what the child is watching. For YouTube, turning autoplay off helps prevent one selected video from becoming an open-ended viewing session.

What about screen-time limits?

Be cautious with fixed daily limits quoted from older guidance. An AAP HealthyChildren article last updated October 21, 2016 states a one-hour daily cap for electronic entertainment for children from 18 months to age five. The AAP’s January 20, 2026 policy summary says its February 2026 policy statement and accompanying technical report replace prior AAP guidance on communications and media. That newer summary emphasizes family media plans, healthy habits, and the 5 Cs, and does not repeat the older article’s numeric cap. Consult the current policy wording rather than presenting the 2016 figure as the latest rule. 2016 AAP article; January 20, 2026 AAP policy summary.
