Eenie Meanie gives Samara Weaving a role suited to her quick shifts between nerve, wit and vulnerability, and she supplies much of the film’s momentum. But Shawn Simmons’s crime comedy is more persuasive as a bruised relationship story than as a driving-centered adrenaline rush: the chases are entertaining when they arrive, yet too sparse to make the getaway-driver premise feel fully realized. Its scale suggests a theatrical caper, though that is a counterfactual, not the film’s release history.
What is Eenie Meanie about?
Released August 22, 2025, Eenie Meanie is a 1-hour-46-minute, R-rated action comedy and thriller written and directed by Shawn Simmons. Samara Weaving plays Edie, also known as Eenie Meanie, a former teenage getaway driver who has tried to leave crime behind. When a former employer offers her a chance to save John, her chronically unreliable ex-boyfriend, she is pulled back into the world she escaped. The premise makes the heist a test of whether Edie can take responsibility for someone she loves without surrendering the independence she has built. (20th Century Studios; Hulu)

Why Samara Weaving fits the role
Edie needs to read as capable behind the wheel and emotionally exposed when the job brings her back into John’s orbit. Weaving makes that combination the film’s clearest asset. She gives Edie a guarded competence that can loosen into warmth or frustration, so the character’s return to danger feels tied to a personal history rather than just a convenient plot mechanism.
William Bibbiani’s review for TheWrap, published August 21, 2025, likewise identifies Weaving and Karl Glusman, who plays John, as the film’s emotional center. Their pairing gives the story a more interesting question than whether a heist will work: whether affection is enough when one person keeps making the other person carry the consequences. The film’s sincerity in those scenes helps anchor its broader comic and criminal machinery. (TheWrap)

Does the relationship story support the crime plot?
The emotional premise is stronger than the mechanics around it. Edie’s decision to help John gives the caper personal stakes, and the exes’ history supplies conflict without requiring the film to pretend their relationship is uncomplicated. Yet the criminal scheme can feel less memorable than the people caught inside it. The film is most engaging when the danger exposes how poorly Edie and John know how to use their love for each other; it is less distinctive when it leans on familiar heist beats.
That imbalance explains why the romance and crime elements do not always lock together. The relationship gives Edie a reason to take the risk, but the plot does not consistently turn that reason into fresh dramatic complications. The result is a film whose emotional center can outshine the caper meant to propel it.

How much driving action is there?
Despite Edie’s defining skill, this is not wall-to-wall car-chase cinema. Bibbiani notes that there are not many chases, while praising the ones that do appear as nifty and the climax’s unusual chaos as exciting. He summed up the trade-off this way: “And while this car chase movie would have benefitted from more car chases, what we get is rousing and, dare I say it, ‘cool.’” (TheWrap)
That is the right expectation to set. Viewers looking for a steady succession of driving set pieces may find the film too talky; those willing to wait for bursts of action get some lively payoff. The chase scenes make good use of the premise when they happen, but their scarcity leaves the title character’s driving talent feeling underused.

Do the comedy and thriller tones work together?
Simmons’s film mixes crime, comedy and relationship drama, but its quippy dialogue does not always make those modes feel like parts of the same whole. Bibbiani finds the sincerity effective even as he regards the dialogue and crime plot as less memorable. Benjamin Lee’s August 22, 2025 Guardian review is more critical, calling the film dated and derivative and finding its banter short on jokes as the story grows predictable. (TheWrap; The Guardian)
The split reflects a real weakness rather than a simple disagreement over taste: the film’s best scenes depend on emotional credibility, while some of its banter and familiar caper turns pull attention away from that credibility. The tonal changes can be appealingly loose, but they also make the comedy less consistent and the thriller less surprising.

Would a theatrical run have suited it?
Eenie Meanie premiered as a streaming film, not as a theatrical release. Disney announced an exclusive Disney+ premiere for August 22, 2025; the current 20th Century Studios listing says it is streaming on Hulu and with Hulu on Disney+. Availability can differ by territory. (Disney press kit; 20th Century Studios)
Lee’s description of the film as a late-summer theatrical caper captures its broad, star-led appeal: a fast-moving crime premise, a recognizable ensemble and action designed to play big. A theatrical run might have amplified the chases and the film’s crowd-pleasing energy, but it would not have fixed the limited number of those sequences or the familiar plotting. The case for cinema is about the kind of experience the film gestures toward, not evidence that it would have played better there.

Is Eenie Meanie worth watching?
It is worth considering for Weaving’s performance and the imperfect, sincere relationship at the story’s center. It is a less convincing choice for viewers seeking an inventive heist or frequent car action. Rotten Tomatoes displayed a 43% Tomatometer from 51 reviews and a 60% Popcornmeter from 250+ ratings when accessed October 8, 2026; these are changing aggregates, not permanent measures of the film. Its critic consensus similarly credits Weaving’s appeal while faulting tonal inconsistency and limited originality. (Rotten Tomatoes)
The film is R-rated. Rotten Tomatoes lists pervasive language, nudity, brief drug use, some sexual material, and violence with bloody images among its content descriptors. (Rotten Tomatoes)
