Play is a return to Ed Sheeran’s familiar pop and singer-songwriter strengths, with cross-cultural collaborations and production giving parts of the album a wider palette. The contrast makes for an appealing listen, though it does not amount to a wholesale reinvention.
Does Play sound different from Ed Sheeran’s Mathematics albums?
Sheeran’s official store presents Play as a new phase after his Mathematics series, framing its sound around musical traditions connected by scale, rhythm and melody. That is the artist’s promotional description, rather than a neutral critical verdict. The Associated Press’s September 12, 2025 review offers a more measured distinction: the album largely stays in Sheeran’s established pop and singer-songwriter lane, while songs such as “Sapphire” and “Azizam” bring cross-cultural influences to the foreground.
That push and pull is the album’s central idea. The new textures widen the setting around Sheeran’s songwriting, but much of the record remains recognizably his: direct melodies and emotionally legible pop rather than a dramatic break with his earlier sound. The global reach is most convincing as an expansion of his familiar approach, not as proof that he has left it behind.
How well do the songs make that approach work?
The Associated Press gave Play three stars out of five. Its song-level selections suggest an album with both highlights and reservations: AP chose “Opening” as its “On Repeat” track and “Camera” as its “Skip it” pick. Those are the outlet’s judgments, not a consensus measure, but they capture the unevenness in its assessment.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
AP also discusses “Sapphire,” “Azizam,” “Old Phone,” “For Always” and “The Vow” in the context of the album’s balance between global influences and Sheeran’s familiar pop instincts. The resulting impression is less of a fully unified new sound than of an artist testing how far new musical colors can stretch a well-established songwriting style.
What is the tracklist, and does it vary by edition?
Apple Music lists the album as released September 12, 2025, with 13 songs and a 44-minute runtime. The standard CD listed by Sheeran’s official store also contains 13 tracks, ending with “Heaven.” Track counts are edition-specific, however: Warner Music Japan lists a 16-track Japanese CD, adding “Problems,” “War Game” and “Crashing” after “Heaven.” That listing identifies “Crashing” as a Japan-only bonus track. Sheeran’s official website displays additional songs after “Heaven,” but its presentation does not label every track by format.

Should you buy the CD or vinyl?
If you want a physical copy with clearly documented contents, the official-store standard CD is the straightforward option: its listing specifies the 13-track sequence and 16-page booklet. For a larger-format presentation, the official-store deluxe LP includes expanded artwork and a 20-page booklet with lyrics and credits. The Japanese CD is worth distinguishing if bonus tracks matter to you; check that the listing is specifically for that edition before ordering. Prices and stock can change, so consult the store listing for current details.

Play is a good fit for listeners who enjoy Sheeran’s melodic, accessible songwriting and are curious to hear it set against a broader range of musical influences. Those hoping for a decisive break from his established sound may find the album more evolutionary than its new-phase framing suggests. Its most interesting tension is also its limitation: the reach grows, while the core remains familiar.
