Don Henley’s testimony in the 2024 Manhattan trial over handwritten Eagles lyric pages included an account of a separate 1980 arrest in Los Angeles. The trial concerned whether three collectibles professionals knowingly possessed or tried to sell draft lyrics associated with Hotel California; it ended in dismissal before a verdict, leaving ownership and the alleged theft unresolved.
What the Eagles lyrics trial was about
The case centered on roughly 100 pages of handwritten draft lyrics associated with songs on the Eagles’ Hotel California album, according to the Associated Press. Prosecutors charged collectibles professionals Glenn Horowitz, Craig Inciardi and Edward Kosinski, alleging they knew the pages were stolen and tried to thwart Henley’s effort to recover them. These were allegations, not findings by a jury. Associated Press
The defense offered a different account: the papers had come through writer Ed Sanders, who received materials while researching a never-published Eagles biography, and the defendants disputed that a crime had occurred. Sanders was not charged. The central dispute was whether he had permission to keep or sell the pages, and whether the defendants knew they were unlawfully held. The New York Times
What Henley said about Sanders and the pages
Henley testified in February 2024 that he did not recall offering lyric pads to Sanders. He argued that even if he had sent the pages, Sanders had no right to retain or sell them. “He had no right to keep or sell them,” Henley told Rolling Stone. Rolling Stone

That testimony expressed Henley’s position; it did not resolve the competing accounts. Eagles manager Irving Azoff told the Associated Press the lyrics were personal to Henley and part of musical history, and that it was “simply unacceptable to him that they be stolen by anyone else.” The prosecution’s theft theory and the defense’s account of how Sanders obtained the papers remained contested. Henley’s account of the 1980 arrest
While testifying, Henley also described an incident at his Los Angeles home in 1980. According to his testimony as reported by Rolling Stone, after a gathering he called a sex worker, later learned she was 16 or 17, and was arrested after police found drugs. He said he pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, received two years’ probation and paid a $2,500 fine. These details are an account of Henley’s testimony, not an independent review of the historical case file. Rolling Stone

Why the case ended without a verdict
On March 6, 2024, prosecutors dismissed the case during trial after communications became available following Henley’s waiver of attorney-client privilege. The prosecution acknowledged that the defense should have had the opportunity to explore relevant information in cross-examination. Associated Press
The dismissal ended the prosecution without a jury verdict. It did not establish that the lyric pages were stolen, nor did it settle who owned them or whether Sanders had permission to retain or sell them.
