Easterine Kire’s novel Spirit Nights won the 2024 Sahitya Akademi Award in English. The Sahitya Akademi’s selection record says the jury chose it unanimously and lists 2022 as its first-publication year. The award was announced in December 2024; the ceremony was scheduled for March 8, 2025, in Delhi.
What won the 2024 English award?
The winning book was Spirit Nights, a novel by Easterine Kire. The Sahitya Akademi’s award list records it as the English-language winner, and the Akademi’s 2024 recommended-books document identifies the genre as a novel, gives 2022 as the year of first publication, and says the English jury selected it unanimously.
When was it announced, and when was the ceremony?
Akashvani reported the award announcement on December 19, 2024, following the announcement the previous day. Its report said the presentation ceremony would take place in Delhi on March 8, 2025. The 2024 designation refers to the award cycle, not the ceremony date.
According to Akashvani’s announcement, awards were announced in 21 languages. It said the award package comprised a copper plaque, a shawl and a cash prize of one lakh rupees.

What is Spirit Nights about?
Akashvani describes the novel as inspired by a story of darkness narrated by the Chang Naga tribe of Nagaland. The Sahitya Akademi’s January–March 2025 newsletter frames it as a fictional account of Naga legends and society and notes that it subtly addresses gender and patriarchy. These are descriptions attributed to the respective sources, rather than a detailed plot summary.
Barbican Press presents Kire’s own account of the book’s origins: “I harvested community memory of the Naga tribes in their remote village homes to gather the tales that fuel this novel. These stories reflect their spiritual world and while some might think of the stories as fantasy or magical, for the villagers, and for me, they are our reality.” The full statement also connects the stories to women’s power, spiritual life and nature. The quotation is published on Barbican Press’s page for the novel.

Who is Easterine Kire?
The Sahitya Akademi’s January–March 2025 newsletter describes Kire as an English writer and poet born in Kohima, Nagaland, on March 29, 1959. It reports that she has 44 publications, including translations from German and Norwegian. That publication count is the Akademi’s biographical figure, not a measure of sales or readership.
Why do sources name different publishers?
Publisher attribution is not consistent across the cited accounts. Barbican Press says it published Spirit Nights in 2022, while Akashvani’s December 2024 report names Simon and Schuster India. The available records do not resolve the difference at the edition level, so neither attribution should be treated as definitive for every edition. Check a specific edition’s imprint and publication details when identifying its publisher.
