EA confirmed on February 28, 2024, that Respawn was pivoting away from early development on a Star Wars first-person action game. EA did not identify it as a Mandalorian game; that connection, along with the proposed gameplay and platforms, came from contemporaneous reporting by Insider Gaming. The distinction matters: the cancellation is official, while the Mandalorian premise remains a reported description of the project.
What EA officially announced
In a February 28, 2024 statement, EA President of EA Entertainment and Technology Laura Miele said the company had decided to “pivot away from early development on a Star Wars FPS Action game” and focus Respawn’s efforts on new projects based on EA’s owned brands while continuing support for existing games. EA described this as a portfolio decision, not a judgment of the developers: Miele said it was “not a reflection of the team’s talent, tenacity, or passion they have for the game.” Read EA’s statement.
EA also said it saw players moving toward large open-world games, large communities, and live services, and that Respawn players were most excited about the studio’s Jedi games and its own brands. Those comments explain EA’s stated portfolio thinking; they do not establish an independently verified, game-specific cause for the cancellation. Insider Gaming separately reported that its sources considered the project financially risky, an explanation EA did not give in its public statement. Insider Gaming’s cancellation report.
Why it was called a Mandalorian game
EA’s announcement named a Star Wars first-person shooter but did not say it was about a Mandalorian. On the same day as the cancellation announcement, Insider Gaming reported, citing sources, that the project was a bounty-hunting game starring a Mandalorian. The outlet said its sources did not believe the protagonist was the character known as “the Mandalorian.” EA has not publicly confirmed that identity or the reported design details.

The project had been announced in broader terms on January 25, 2022. EA said Respawn was making a new Star Wars first-person shooter led by game director Peter Hirschmann and that work had just begun. The announcement placed it alongside a new Jedi game and a strategy game being developed by Bit Reactor with Respawn producing; it did not describe the shooter as Mandalorian. EA’s 2022 announcement.
What the game was reportedly going to be like
Insider Gaming’s February 29, 2024 follow-up described a first-person action game built around taking bounty contracts and fighting through linear levels with larger areas to explore, rather than an open world. The outlet’s account of the proposed structure and mechanics was based on sources, not an official gameplay reveal.

How far along was it, and which platforms were reported?
Insider Gaming reported that the project had a fairly polished vertical slice and several completed levels, and that it was in development for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. The outlet nevertheless described it as some way from release. EA did not confirm those milestones or platforms in the materials cited here. No official title, trailer, release date, or price was established.
How it differs from Star Wars Zero Company
