If Dune: Part Two has you in the mood for more science fiction, try one of these four films: 2001: A Space Odyssey for a contemplative space epic, Aliens for horror and action, Ex Machina for an AI thriller, or RoboCop for violent, satirical action. They offer distinct ways to follow up on Denis Villeneuve’s scale and ideas—though a recommendation published in May 2024 does not establish that any title is still on Max in your region today.
Four sci-fi films to consider after Dune: Part Two
The picks below come from a May 21, 2024 BGR recommendation that paired them with Dune: Part Two. Choose by the kind of science fiction you want next, rather than treating the list as a ranking.
| Film | Best fit if you want | What it offers |
|---|---|---|
| 2001: A Space Odyssey | A slower, more philosophical space film | Visionary space travel and questions about humanity. |
| Aliens | A tense mix of horror and action | A science-fiction sequel that leans into both suspense and combat. |
| Ex Machina | An intimate AI thriller | A suspenseful story centered on artificial intelligence and a humanoid robot. |
| RoboCop | Satire with hard-edged action | A violent science-fiction take on cyborg action and social satire. |
Which one matches what you liked about Dune: Part Two?
For scale and big questions: 2001: A Space Odyssey
Choose 2001 if you want science fiction that treats space travel and humanity as subjects for reflection, not just a backdrop for action. It is the closest match here for a grand, idea-driven mood.
For danger and momentum: Aliens
Pick Aliens if you want a sharper shift toward horror and action. Its appeal in this lineup is the tension between those modes, rather than the contemplative scale of Dune.

For AI and suspense: Ex Machina
Ex Machina is the choice for a contained thriller about artificial intelligence and a humanoid robot. It trades vast landscapes and large-scale conflict for a more focused source of unease.
For satire and cyborg action: RoboCop
Choose RoboCop for violent action with a satirical edge. It is the most pointedly irreverent option among the four.

Check Max in your region before settling on a film
Streaming catalogues change, and availability can differ by country and account. The May 2024 BGR article is a historical recommendation, not confirmation that these movies remain on Max. Search for each title in the Max app or website for your location before planning a watch.
Rotten Tomatoes’ browse page, accessed October 8, 2026, lists Dune: Part Two, Dune, and 2001: A Space Odyssey among its HBO Max sci-fi selections. Its displayed scores are a dated snapshot, not a catalogue guarantee: the page showed Dune: Part Two at 92% Tomatometer and 95% Popcornmeter, Dune at 83% and 90%, and 2001 at 90% and 88%. The figures can change and do not confirm availability in every market.

- Denis Villeneuve returns to direct this second instalment of the adaptation of Frank Herbert's epic sci-fi novel.
Why Dune: Part Two makes a useful jumping-off point
The film continues Paul Atreides’ story after his father’s death in Dune: Part One, as Paul learns the ways of the Fremen, according to Associated Press coverage from May 2024. That combination of world-building, political stakes, and speculative ideas makes the four follow-ups easy to sort by mood: expansive, frightening, intimate, or satirical.
