Goten and Trunks are best friends, childhood sparring partners, and friendly rivals whose bond grows through play, competition, training, and cooperation. Their most consequential partnership comes during the Majin Buu crisis, when they learn Fusion and become Gotenks. Years later, they team up again as Saiyaman X-1 and X-2 in the Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero story.
Are Goten and Trunks best friends?
Yes. The official Goten character profile describes Trunks as Goten’s good friend and says the two often play-fight. Their friendship is not just a label attached to their battles: the story shows them playing, competing, training, and relying on one another.

Their bond also has room for rivalry. At the junior division tournament, Trunks and Goten face each other in a real contest. Trunks is one year older and fights using only his right hand; Goten is knocked out of the ring. The match combines affection with a genuine desire to win, rather than making the boys either purely rivals or purely cooperative partners.
How does their rivalry shape their friendship?
The tournament makes the balance between care and competition visible. In an official interview, clinical psychologist Haruka Sudo reads Trunks’s one-handed approach as a tension between going easy on his younger friend and wanting a fair contest. That is Sudo’s interpretation of the scene, not an explicit explanation supplied by the story.

Their competition continues alongside their companionship. They play-fight and train together, and their shared skill lets them take on challenges neither could face in the same way alone. The rivalry gives their friendship energy; it does not cancel their trust or closeness.
What makes their bond deeper during the Majin Buu crisis?
Sudo describes their earlier connection as a childhood peer relationship that develops into a more intimate friendship. She points to the boys’ shared distress and common goal during the Majin Buu crisis as part of that change. Reflecting on a scene in which they cry, she says, “it really gave me the impression that they’re close enough to show weakness in front of each other.”

She also suggests that facing the same enemy and sharing a position understood by the other boy helps them feel less alone. These are an expert’s readings of fictional scenes, not a psychological diagnosis or evidence about real children.
How do Goten and Trunks become Gotenks?
Fusion is a technique that combines two warriors into one. According to the official Goten profile, Goku learned it from the inhabitants of Planet Metamor and passed it on to Goten. The two participants must match a complicated dance and its poses. When Goten and Trunks perform it successfully, they become Gotenks: a temporary combined warrior, not a separate person who replaces their friendship.
The boys do not master the technique instantly. The official recap describes an early failure followed by more practice. As Gotenks, they fight Majin Buu more than once, but the form’s limited duration and Gotenks’s overconfidence affect how those encounters unfold. Gotenks later reaches Super Saiyan 3.
The series’ Fusion technique should be kept distinct from scientific explanation. In a separate official interview with cell-engineering researcher Naoki Wada, Wada offers speculative biological analogies, including a hypothetical return-to-zygote idea, and describes his approach as an imaginative way to think through the fiction. Those ideas are not established science explaining how Fusion works in Dragon Ball.

Do Goten and Trunks team up again as teenagers?
Yes. In the Super Hero story, high-school-aged Trunks and Goten protect the city as Saiyaman X-1 and Saiyaman X-2. The official Saiyamen overview places that prequel story in Japanese Dragon Ball Super volumes 20–23. This later team-up shows their partnership continuing beyond childhood; which editions are available depends on market and language.
