What is The Cinema Travellers about?
Directed by Shirley Abraham and Amit Madheshiya, The Cinema Travellers is a 96-minute documentary about travelling cinemas that visit remote Indian villages. Its focus is a circuit in Maharashtra associated with religious fairs known as jatras. The film follows an exhibitor, a showman and a projector mechanic as they work to keep screenings going. The Festival de Cannes film record describes the annual journeys, the deteriorating lorries and projectors, the scarcity of film reels, and the growing pull of digital technology.

The film’s bittersweet quality comes from the contrast between the spectacle of a cinema arriving at a village and the practical difficulties of sustaining the operation. A screening depends not just on films and audiences, but on transport, working equipment and people able to keep the whole circuit moving. This makes the documentary more than a celebration of an old-fashioned experience: it watches a working system under strain.
How did the filmmakers find the cinemas?
Abraham and Madheshiya told Cannes that their interest began as they watched single-screen theatres decline and wondered about alternatives to conventional moviegoing. They travelled across India in 2008 to investigate, then began filming in 2011. Cannes says the completed documentary was filmed over five years and follows three people involved in keeping the last travelling cinemas operating. These are the filmmakers’ account of how the project developed, rather than a definitive history of all touring cinema in India. Their 2016 Cannes interview recounts that scholars they approached were surprised the cinemas existed and that they found little research on the subject at the time.

The filmmakers’ early work also included research and photo-documentation of tent cinemas following religious fairs in Maharashtra. The India Foundation for the Arts describes the screenings as part of a broader fairground culture, with audiences and cultural ephemera around the cinema itself. Its account helps explain why the film’s setting is specific: it concerns a documented circuit connected with fairs in Maharashtra, not a map or census of every travelling cinema in India. IFA’s 2017 screening listing identifies that event’s version as Hindi and Marathi with English subtitles.
Why does the touring cinema feel as if it is fading?
The film presents several pressures together: aging lorries and projectors need to keep functioning, film reels are becoming scarce, and digital technology is changing how people watch films. Its account does not establish that any single factor explains the decline. Instead, the touring model appears vulnerable because it relies on physical equipment and a recurring journey from fair to fair while audiences encounter new ways to view films.

In a 2016 interview, Abraham and Madheshiya were asked whether the last touring cinemas could keep running. They answered, “They will definitely not continue in the forms we saw them.” They described the experience as “like a fairy-tale,” while also saying they were not betting on the cinemas’ survival because continuing was difficult. That was the directors’ assessment at the time, not a verified statement about the circuit’s status in 2026.

The Cinema Travellers appeared in the 2016 Cannes Classics program. In 2017, the Government of India reported that it received the Special Jury Award in the Non-Feature category at the 64th National Film Awards, which were announced that year. The Press Information Bureau’s award announcement records the distinction.

The British Film Institute catalogue entry includes a “Watch film” lead, but the available information here does not establish a current service, territory, price or viewing availability. The IFA event listing documents a past screening, not present screening rights. Check those records directly for any current option rather than assuming the film is streaming or available for a licensed community screening.
