The new trailer for A Quiet Place: Day One shows New York City at the start of the invasion—and the terrifying risk of making a sound. It gives viewers glimpses of Samira and Eric trying to escape, but it does not explain where the creatures came from or provide a scientific answer for why the world went quiet.
What the trailer reveals about the first day
In its May 9, 2024 report on the trailer, Ars Technica describes a Manhattan setting, the arrival of the sound-hunting creatures, and Samira and Eric attempting to get away. The trailer’s central danger is familiar to the franchise: noise can draw the creatures close. Here, that threat unfolds as the city is plunged into sudden peril.
Those scene details are descriptions of the trailer, not a complete official plot summary. Paramount Pictures’ official synopsis gives the broader premise: Samira returns home to New York City when the creatures attack, accompanied by her cat Frodo and an unexpected ally, and must travel through a suddenly silent city.
Why did the world go quiet?
The title’s question is a dramatic hook, not an answer the official synopsis spells out. Paramount describes mysterious creatures that hunt by sound and the silence that follows their attack, but its synopsis does not establish the creatures’ origin or explain the event scientifically. The trailer sets up the panic of that first day; it should not be treated as confirmation of a detailed explanation that the official material does not provide.

How the film fits into A Quiet Place
A Quiet Place: Day One is a prequel and spin-off in the A Quiet Place universe, shifting the focus to the beginning of the attack in New York City. Paramount’s official page describes it as a “terrifying continuation of the A Quiet Place universe.” The trailer’s appeal is seeing the sound-based threat collide with a densely populated city as the crisis begins, rather than following the established family’s story.
