Its effect depends on the task, the music, and the listener: lyrics can interfere with reading and verbal memory, while even instrumental music may distract during difficult work. Music may still help some people feel more positive or engaged, but feeling focused is not the same as learning more or producing better work.
Does music help you study?
There is no single answer for every student or subject. A systematic review found that background music’s effects vary with the kind and difficulty of the cognitive task, the music, and individual listener characteristics. When the review found significant effects, they were mostly negative—but its vote-counting approach did not calculate one pooled effect size. It therefore cannot tell you that music has a particular average effect or will affect every student the same way. Cheah and colleagues’ 2022 systematic review covered empirical studies published from January 1, 1960, through July 2, 2020; that is the review’s search window, not a census of all research available today.
A 2026 randomized study gives a useful counterexample to the idea that music inevitably harms reading. Among 279 university students who often studied with music, reading-comprehension scores did not differ between those assigned to self-selected music, background noise, or silence. Students assigned music maintained emotional positivity, while those assigned noise or silence reported a decline. That finding applies to the study’s participants and reading task; it does not establish that music improves comprehension or benefits every reader. The study is indexed by PubMed.
Is it better to study with music or in silence?
Silence is a sensible starting point when the task is demanding or depends on close attention. The systematic review found that background music could impair difficult cognitive tasks, including when the music was instrumental. For reading, language study, and remembering verbal material, lyrics are a particular reason to try silence or instrumental music instead.

- App for EQ Customization: Download the soundcore app to tailor your sound using the customizable EQ, with 22 presets, or adjust it yourself. You can also switch between 3 modes: ANC, Normal, and Transparency, and relax with white noise.
- Reading or verbal material: If lyrics compete with the words you are reading or trying to remember, test silence first. Instrumental music may be less disruptive, but it is not guaranteed to help.
- Difficult or unfamiliar work: Use silence as a baseline, since challenging tasks may be affected by music even without lyrics.
- Routine tasks: Music may feel pleasant or help some listeners stay engaged. Judge whether it helps by the work completed and its accuracy, not only by how focused you felt.
A practical way to decide is to compare your usual music with silence while doing the same kind of task, then assess recall, accuracy, or finished work. This is a sensible personal comparison, not a validated experiment or a tested protocol.
Does music with lyrics make it harder to concentrate?
Lyrics are more likely to interfere when a task relies on language or memory, though they do not have the same proven effect on every task. A four-task study found that lyrical music hindered verbal memory, visual memory, and reading comprehension; its negative effect on arithmetic was not credible. In that study, instrumental lo-fi hip-hop did not credibly improve or impair performance. The 2023 study is evidence about the tested conditions, not proof that all songs with lyrics harm every activity.

- Two Devices, Zero Hassle: Stay connected to your laptop and phone at the same time. Audio switches automatically to whichever device needs you — so a call never interrupts your flow, and getting back to your playlist is just as easy. Designed for commuters and remote workers who move smoothly between work and personal listening throughout the day.
- Your Sound, Your Rules: The soundcore app puts everything at your fingertips — dials your ideal EQ with presets or build your own, flip between ANC, Normal, and Transparency modes on the fly, or wind down with built-in white noise. One app, total control.
A separate randomized controlled attention study assigned 102 adults aged 20–24 to conditions involving music with or without lyrics. Lyrical music had significant negative effects on concentration and attention. The authors recommended music without lyrics if background music is played at work. This was an attention test, however, not a demonstration that instrumental music raises productivity in real workplaces. The study appeared in Work in 2012.
What kind of music is best for studying?
The available evidence does not establish one best genre, tempo, or playlist. Instrumental music avoids lyrics, which may reduce one source of competition for language-heavy tasks, but it can still distract—especially during difficult work. A 2021 paper examined how people use music in relation to cognitive performance, but the systematic review’s broader conclusion remains that task and listener differences matter. Goltz and Sadakata’s paper does not justify naming a universally optimal study playlist.

Choose based on what you are doing and how you respond: consider whether the task is routine or demanding, whether the music has lyrics, and whether the outcome you care about is actual recall, accuracy, or output rather than felt focus. If music makes it easier for you to begin or stay with a task, that can matter for engagement, but it is not proof that you understand or remember more. The systematic review notes that perceived benefits may come through mood, motivation, relaxation, or energy, even when measured cognitive performance does not improve.

Studies differ in methods, tasks, music, and participants, and everyday work often combines activities in ways laboratory tasks do not capture. The systematic review also identifies writing quality, language learning, and creativity as areas that remain understudied. The evidence supports a task-specific choice—not a universal rule that music either boosts or damages studying and work.
