Digital fiction is now a substantial way to read and follow stories, from web novels and scrollable comics to ebooks and audiobooks. But it is not one format, and the evidence does not show that it has broadly replaced books or screen series. The stronger conclusion is that digital-first stories compete for attention while also feeding readers, audiences and intellectual property into other formats.
What counts as digital fiction?
The term covers several different experiences. Some are digital editions of familiar book formats; others are stories designed to unfold online or on a screen. That distinction matters when asking whether digital fiction is an alternative to books: an ebook is still a book, while a chapter-by-chapter web novel is a different publishing model.
| Format | How the story is experienced | What it is an alternative to |
|---|---|---|
| Ebook | Text read on a phone, tablet, computer or e-reader; it may be a complete book or a digital edition of a print title. | Primarily a different way to read a book, rather than a different kind of story. |
| Web novel or online fiction | Text published online, often in installments and sometimes with reader-facing platform features. | Can compete with conventional book releases for reading time, while remaining distinct from a finished print or ebook edition. |
| Audiobook | A narrated story listened to through an app, website, library service or other audio channel. | Offers a listening option, not the same activity as reading printed or on-screen text. |
| Digital comic or webcomic | Illustrated episodes designed for digital reading; some use vertical scrolling. | Competes for time with comics, books and other mobile entertainment, with a visual format of its own. |
| Screen adaptation or web series | Audiovisual storytelling released as episodes or a film. “Web series” can mean streaming television or short-form vertical drama. | It is a viewing format, not a synonym for online fiction. A screen story may adapt a book or web novel rather than replace it. |
Access models also differ. A digital story might be bought, borrowed, included in a subscription, offered free with advertising, or unlocked by installment. The evidence available here does not establish current prices or typical creator earnings, which vary by platform and rights arrangement.
Is digital fiction replacing books?
Not on the evidence available. The case for digital fiction is strongest when “books” means print-only books or conventional publishing as a business model. It is much weaker if books includes ebooks and audiobooks, since those are digital ways of delivering book-length stories.

China’s large digital-reading and online-literature markets
China’s National Reading website’s summary of the 2025 China Digital Reading Report, published April 20, 2026, says digital reading reached 61.24% penetration among internet users in China. The report treats digital reading broadly: ebooks and online literature sit within general reading, audio reading is a separate category, and professional reading is another. Its penetration figure therefore is not a measure of fiction readers alone.
A separate measure comes from a Chinese Academy of Social Sciences report, summarized by the State Council of the People’s Republic of China website and Xinhua on April 13, 2026: online-literature reading revenue in China reached 50.21 billion yuan in 2025, a 16.6% increase from 2024. This is a market-revenue figure for online-literature reading, not a count of readers and not the same measure as overall digital-reading penetration.
The same report put revenue from online-literature adaptations at 367.61 billion yuan in 2025, up 23.13% year on year. That adaptation figure describes a different commercial category from reading revenue; it should not be added to the 50.21 billion yuan reading figure as if both measured the same market. Together, the figures show that online literature in China has a substantial commercial ecosystem, including activity beyond reading, but they do not demonstrate that it has displaced conventional books.

Digital reading is not one uniform habit
The 2025 China Digital Reading Report also describes changes and frictions within digital reading. It says willingness to listen to audio exceeded half of digital-reading users for the first time. It reports that average time per reading session among 19–25-year-olds across ebooks, databases and online literature fell from 125.93 minutes in 2024 to 96.31 minutes in 2025. That is a change reported for those categories and that age group; it does not establish why session length changed or prove that reading became shallower.

The report also identifies incomplete copyright protection, repetitive content and imbalanced recommendations as concerns, and says the growth of short-drama adaptations may disrupt traditional web-fiction reading and platform business. It notes that some platforms have reduced or closed reading operations amid the adaptation shift. These are meaningful counterweights to the growth figures: a larger digital ecosystem does not guarantee diverse stories, stable platform businesses or better outcomes for creators.
Are web novels and webcomics becoming as popular as TV series?
There is evidence of sizeable audiences and committed users, but not a like-for-like comparison with television or the general public. A platform’s audience total is not an industry-wide count, and survey results from people who already read webcomics cannot establish what all viewers prefer.

Webcomics have focused, engaged readership
WEBTOON Entertainment reported approximately 155 million monthly active users for its entertainment ecosystem in September 2026. That is a company-reported figure for its own ecosystem, not a total for the webcomic industry. In a US online survey of more than 500 people aged 13–49 who read webcomics at least monthly, fielded by WEBTOON and NRG in April and May 2026, 90% said they often chose webcomics over other entertainment. That result describes the selected monthly-reader sample, not the wider US population.
The finding is useful as evidence that webcomics can be a serious entertainment choice for their regular readers. It does not show that webcomics have overtaken streaming series, books or other formats in total audience or time spent. WEBTOON describes its stories as spanning vertical-scroll comics and adaptations for television, animation and other screens; those routes can make one story a starting point for several formats.

The Audio Publishers Association’s 2025 US sales data, published in 2026, show that digital audiobooks accounted for 99% of US audiobook revenue in 2025, while fiction represented 71% of audiobook sales. The association says its sales survey was conducted by Toluna and its consumer-behavior survey by Edison Research, both in spring 2026. These figures establish the importance of digital delivery within the US audiobook market; they do not compare audiobook revenue with print-book sales or show that listeners have stopped reading text.

How are books and screen adaptations connected?
In many cases, the relationship is better described as exchange than substitution: books provide material for screen productions, and adaptations can prompt people to seek out books. The available findings support that pathway, although they measure different places and populations.
Adaptations are a significant source of screen stories
The Publishers Association’s March 11, 2026 report, Books on Screen: Book adaptations’ importance to the UK’s creative industries and reading for enjoyment, says 48% of original UK and US drama series on Disney+, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video from January 2024 through June 2025 were adapted from books. That finding concerns original drama on those three services in those territories and dates; it is not a share of every streaming show, film or web series worldwide.
Screen stories can help readers discover books
The same Publishers Association report found that, among occasional book readers, 12% of adult-fiction purchases in the 12 months ending October 2025 were discovered by or chosen because of adaptations. This is a finding about a particular reader group and purchase period, not the share of all book sales attributable to television or film.

In Italy, a 2026 summary by Netflix of NIQ research presented with the Italian Publishers Association ranked series and films second among book-discovery sources named by surveyed readers: 29% cited them, compared with 38% for bookshops or physical displays and 23% for word of mouth. The underlying study covered 187 series and films from 2022–2025 and 2,403 associated book titles; the consumer survey used a sample of 1,500 readers and book buyers representative of Italy. Netflix commissioned the research, so the findings should be read with that context in mind. They support a discovery link in Italy, not a universal measure of how adaptations affect book sales.
These studies point to a practical pattern: an audience may encounter a story on screen and then choose a book, or encounter a book before watching its adaptation. Neither route makes the other format obsolete. In its report description, the Publishers Association calls books “vital for the screen industries,” an industry perspective consistent with the adaptation share it reports but not, by itself, proof of what causes audiences to watch.
What makes digital fiction appealing—and what does it trade away?
Digital formats change how stories are delivered and discovered, not just where text appears. A reader choosing among them can consider the experience they want rather than treating every format as a direct substitute.
- Release rhythm: A conventional book is often available as a complete work, while online fiction and comics may arrive in installments. Serial releases can make following a story an ongoing habit; they also mean the reader may need to wait for the next episode.
- Mode of attention: Ebooks and web novels center on text, audiobooks make stories portable through listening, and webcomics combine images with text. Screen adaptations add performance, sound and moving images.
- Discovery and continuation: Readers can move between a web novel, a print or ebook edition, an audiobook and an adaptation when those versions exist. The adaptation findings above show that screen-to-book discovery occurs in some measured contexts.
- Access and ownership: A title may be purchased, borrowed or accessed through a platform’s subscription or free tier. The exact availability, permanence and rights depend on the service and title; there is no single access model for digital fiction.
- Creator economics: Platforms and adaptation deals create routes for stories to reach audiences across formats, but the available figures do not show what creators typically earn or how revenue is divided. Market growth should not be mistaken for a guarantee of creator income.
What the evidence does—and does not—establish
The figures come from distinct markets and methods: China’s broad digital-reading report and online-literature revenue, US audiobook sales, a US survey of existing webcomic readers, UK and US adaptation data, and an Italy study commissioned by Netflix. They cannot be combined into one global estimate of digital fiction’s size or used to rank all formats by popularity.
They do establish that online literature can support large-scale reading and adaptation businesses in China, that digital audio is central to US audiobook revenue, and that webcomics have committed audiences on a major platform. They also show that screen adaptations can be connected to book discovery and that books remain a substantial source of screen material. What they do not establish is a general decline in print books caused by digital fiction, or a universal preference for digital stories over television and other screen entertainment.
