The change was not reported as a worldwide cancellation, and Disney said it was working to restore the features. By August 3, reporting said 4K restoration had begun, but some devices might not yet support it and HDR was still being restored.
What Disney+ removed
The July change concerned 4K UHD resolution and HDR, including HDR10, for some Premium subscribers in several European markets. Disney’s Nordic and Baltic company told FlatpanelsHD that, following a court ruling affecting the technology used to deliver the formats, it had “temporarily removed support for 4K UHD and HDR on Disney+.” The company said it was working to restore support. FlatpanelsHD reported the announcement on July 30, 2026.
That is narrower than saying Disney+ axed 4K worldwide or permanently. The reports do not establish a complete list of affected countries, and they do not show that every Premium subscriber in the named regional context lost the same features.
Why the features were removed
Disney attributed the temporary change to a court ruling that affected technology it used to deliver 4K UHD and HDR. InterDigital, a party to the dispute, described its European litigation against Disney as involving video-encoding technology in an August 2026 statement. That account is the patent holder’s description of the dispute; it does not, by itself, establish the complete legal basis for each service change. InterDigital’s August statement.

Is 4K back, and what about HDR?
As of Broadband TV News’ August 3, 2026 report, Disney had adopted alternative technology and begun restoring 4K UHD. Disney cautioned that 4K might remain unavailable on some devices while it expanded device support. The same report said HDR was still being restored at that point. Broadband TV News quoted Disney’s update.
That August update does not confirm the current status on October 8, 2026, for every country, device, or format. The available reporting does not provide a complete country-by-country or device-by-device status chart. A TV’s technical ability to display 4K or HDR also does not prove that Disney+ has restored the relevant format for that device.

Don’t confuse the July change with Dolby Vision and 3D
Disney+ had already removed Dolby Vision and 3D support in some of the same regional context in June 2026. Those were separate changes from the July removal of 4K UHD and HDR/HDR10. FlatpanelsHD linked the earlier downgrade to a European patent dispute involving InterDigital. Its July report distinguishes the changes.

If you already want a viewing option that does not depend on Disney+’s streaming-format availability, a 4K UHD Blu-ray player and compatible discs are one alternative. Physical media does not restore 4K or HDR in the Disney+ app; it is a separate way to watch titles available on disc. What Hi-Fi’s July 31 coverage discusses the contrast with physical discs.
