On March 20, 2016, the movement held its first Mega Dinkan Religious Convention in Kozhikode, where attendees heard speeches and songs and took part in deliberately comic rituals.
Who is Dinkan?
Dinkan is a fictional mouse with superhero powers from Balamangalam, a Malayalam children’s comic. The character was created by writer N. Somashekharan and artist Baby in 1983, according to a 2016 Times of India report. Balamangalam ran the comic from 1983 until the magazine ended in 2012, as Scroll.in reported.
He was not a historical or religious figure. Dinkoists turned the comic-book character into the center of a parody of religion, borrowing familiar forms such as sacred texts, songs, symbols, rituals and clergy-like roles, then exaggerating them for comic effect. Scroll described Balamangalam as a “holy book” in this satire and also mentioned a text called Dinkapuranam; these were features of the movement’s parody, not evidence of conventional religious doctrine.
What did Dinkoism satirize?
Scroll reported that rationalists in Kerala began Dinkoism in 2008 in response to the influence of organized religion and what they viewed as growing intolerance and weakened rational thought. The movement used Dinkan’s fictional world and religious parody to criticize superstition and intolerance. Its aims, as reported at the time, also included discussion of gender justice and environmental protection.

Prashanth Nair, Kozhikode’s district collector at the time, described the approach in a 2016 interview with Scroll: “Dinkoism is a religion where you learn to take things lightly and become tolerant to things that you don’t appreciate otherwise.” He also said: “Dinkoists use humour to send the message. Humour is something that everybody appreciates. Therefore, it makes sense to promote this religion.” These were Nair’s observations about the movement’s use of humor; they do not establish its effectiveness or any official recognition.

Coverage described speeches, songs and satirical lectures. One deliberately comic ritual involved attendees throwing paper balls at a jackfruit, a joke connected to an incident in the comic. The event’s religious language and staging were part of the satire, rather than evidence that participants regarded Dinkan as a conventional deity.
Why reports gave different attendance figures
Contemporaneous accounts did not agree on attendance. Scroll quoted organizer Sojan Joseph saying “thousands flocked” to the hall, while noting that the Times of India put the number at 500. The New Indian Express reported more than 300 people. These are attributed estimates, not a verified headcount:
