There is no evidence-based way to rank the two cases as simply “bigger” from the records compared here. Sean Combs was convicted of two transportation-to-engage-in-prostitution counts and acquitted of racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking. Jeffrey Epstein’s record includes a 2008 Florida guilty plea and a separate 2019 federal indictment alleging the exploitation of dozens of minor girls. Those are different proceedings, charges and kinds of legal findings—not equivalent measures of wrongdoing or victim totals.
What does “bigger” mean?
The phrase can refer to different things: the conduct alleged, the number and ages of people involved, the charges proved in court, the sentences imposed, or the public attention a case received. Those measures cannot be substituted for one another. In particular, an indictment describes allegations, while a guilty plea or jury verdict records an adjudicated outcome.
The available records do not establish a common scale for comparing the two cases or a comparable, verified total of victims. A responsible comparison therefore has to keep allegations separate from findings and state which measure it is discussing.
What happened in Combs’s federal criminal case?
The jury’s mixed verdict
On July 2, 2025, a federal jury found Sean Combs guilty on two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution. It acquitted him of racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking. The result was a mixed verdict: the convictions do not mean the jury accepted every allegation made by prosecutors, and the acquittals should not be obscured when describing the outcome.

The prosecution’s broader narrative included allegations of coercion involving two former girlfriends. Those allegations should be attributed to prosecutors unless they refer to a specific finding by the jury. The verdict itself was narrower: two counts of conviction and acquittals on the racketeering-conspiracy and sex-trafficking charges.
The sentence
On October 3, 2025, the court imposed a 50-month prison sentence, five years of supervised release and a $500,000 fine. The amended judgment, entered October 16, 2025, also ordered forfeiture tied to property used or intended to facilitate the offenses of conviction. These figures describe the federal judgment in United States v. Combs, not a measure of the case’s overall scale.

The separate civil lawsuit
Cassie Ventura filed a civil lawsuit on November 16, 2023, alleging abuse. The Associated Press reported that the case settled the next day on undisclosed terms and that Combs denied the accusations through his attorney. A settlement is not a jury finding or a criminal conviction, and undisclosed terms do not establish what either side conceded.
What do the cited Epstein records establish?
The 2008 Florida plea
A Justice Department-hosted court-record excerpt reports that Epstein pleaded guilty in Florida in 2008 to a state charge involving a person under 18. He was sentenced to 18 months and served 13 months, according to that excerpt. This is a guilty plea in a state case; it is distinct from the later federal indictment.

The 2019 federal indictment
A separate federal indictment in 2019 alleged that Epstein exploited dozens of minor girls and recruited them at residences in Manhattan and Palm Beach from 2002 through 2005. Those are allegations stated in an indictment, not findings established by a verdict in that document. They must not be presented as though the indictment itself adjudicated them.
The 2008 plea and 2019 indictment describe different legal events. Combining them into a single outcome—or treating the indictment’s allegations as equivalent to the plea—would misstate the record.

Why the headline comparison can mislead
- Allegations are not convictions. The 2019 Epstein indictment’s claims must be identified as allegations. The Combs jury’s findings are limited to the counts on which it convicted him.
- Different legal outcomes do not make a clean scorecard. A guilty plea to a state charge and a federal jury’s mixed verdict arose under different charges and circumstances.
- People described in a case are not a verified comparative total. “Dozens” in an indictment is not an adjudicated count to set beside a number from a different record.
- Public prominence is not measured here. The records described do not quantify or compare the cases’ media attention.
At Combs’s October 2025 sentencing, Judge Arun Subramanian said, “You abused them physically, emotionally and psychologically,” according to the Guardian’s October 3, 2025 coverage. The Guardian also reported that the judge told victims who came forward, “We heard you.” These are the judge’s remarks as reported by that outlet; they do not change which charges the jury convicted Combs of or acquitted him on.
What can be concluded from these records?
The records support a careful comparison of specific things: the Combs jury’s two convictions and acquittals, the sentence imposed in that case, Epstein’s 2008 Florida plea, and the allegations in the 2019 federal indictment. They do not establish that one scandal was categorically “bigger” than the other. That claim would require a defined measure and comparable evidence that the records described here do not provide.
