Probably not—at least, the available evidence does not establish that Super Saiyan copied Super Sonic. The public timeline points the other way: Super Saiyan is generally dated to 1991, while Super Sonic debuted in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in 1992. That makes influence from Dragon Ball chronologically possible, but it does not prove that Sonic’s creators borrowed the idea.
Which transformation appeared first?
Super Saiyan came first in public, according to the commonly cited chronology. A 2025 PC Gamer article dates the form’s debut to 1991. The Dragon Ball Official Site’s chronology has a 1992 entry labeled “Super Saiyan, Son Goku,” but that entry does not identify a manga chapter or give a precise first-publication date. The sources therefore differ in precision: 1991 is a secondary report, while the official chronology excerpt establishes only a 1992 milestone.
SEGA dates the Japanese release of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 to November 21, 1992, and its manual gives November 24, 1992 for the US and Europe. Super Sonic is associated with that game. SEGA’s Sonic Origins page also lists the game and gives its Japanese date; the official manual provides the regional dates.
So the best-supported answer to “Did Super Saiyan come before Super Sonic?” is yes. The order makes influence possible, but chronology alone cannot show that one design caused the other.

Does resemblance prove a rip-off?
No. Calling something a “rip-off” implies copying, not merely that two characters share a visual idea. Both forms are powered-up versions of familiar heroes, but that broad resemblance is not evidence of a specific borrowing. To establish copying, one would need reliable evidence about the creative decision—such as a direct, attributable account from someone responsible or documentation of the design process.
No reliable direct statement from Akira Toriyama, Yuji Naka, or another directly responsible creator establishing that Super Sonic was designed as a copy of Super Saiyan appears in the sources available here. Nor do those sources document when Super Sonic’s design was developed relative to the manga’s publication. Without that evidence, claims about intent go beyond what the timeline can support.

What the timeline can—and cannot—tell us
- It can establish public order: Super Saiyan is generally dated to 1991, and Super Sonic appeared with Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in 1992.
- It can make influence plausible: an earlier public appearance could have been seen by later creators.
- It cannot prove influence or copying: a later release date does not reveal the source of an idea, its designer’s intent, or when a design was conceived.
- It cannot settle detailed comparisons: the available sources are stronger on release chronology than on the forms’ mechanics or full story roles.
A careful comparison would treat debut date, visual design, transformation trigger, and story or gameplay function as separate questions. Similarity on one axis does not settle the others.

SEGA’s official Sonic the Hedgehog 2 manual lists the Japanese date as November 21, 1992 and the US/Europe date as November 24, 1992. SEGA’s Sonic Origins collection page lists Sonic the Hedgehog 2 among the included games and gives the Japanese date. These establish the game’s release timing; neither is evidence about why Super Sonic was designed as he was.
