She described feeling caught between roles associated with younger women and those associated with mothers.
What did Demi Moore say about being in her 40s?
In a conversation with Michelle Yeoh for Interview magazine, Moore reflected on how the script for The Substance resonated with her, including its treatment of aging and societal conditioning. The Evening Standard reported her remarks on 27 August 2024 and quoted her saying: “And then I found that there didn’t seem to be a place for me. I didn’t feel like I didn’t belong.”
She explained the distinction: “It’s more like I felt that feeling of, I’m not 20, I’m not 30, but I wasn’t yet what they perceived as a mother.” Her account was about her own experience, not a claim about every actress’s career.
Why did she feel caught between roles?
Moore described a gap between the parts she associated with younger women and those she felt Hollywood perceived as roles for mothers. She did not say she felt unwelcome; rather, she said she struggled to see where she fit at that point in her career.

What did Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle have to do with it?
Moore linked the reflection to the attention around her bikini scene in the 2003 film, in which she played Madison Lee. As quoted by The Standard, she recalled: “I had done Charlie’s Angels, and there was a lot of conversation around this scene in a bikini, and it was all very heightened, a lot of talk about how I looked.”
The comments were reported as part of her conversation with Yeoh about The Substance, a film whose themes of aging and social expectations resonated with Moore. The accessible account of the interview is The Standard’s report; its quoted remarks should be understood as reproduced there.

The Standard’s report supports the account that Moore felt there was no place for her in Hollywood in her 40s. It does not establish that she called the decade her “hardest,” so that wording should not be treated as a verified quotation or characterization of her remarks.
