The White House’s account emphasized applause and chants instead.
What happened at the June 11 performance
Trump and Melania Trump attended the opening-night performance of Les Misérables at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. The arrival drew competing reactions rather than a uniformly supportive or hostile response.
The Associated Press reported that Trump was booed and cheered as he took his seat. Reuters described a loud mix of boos and cheers as the couple arrived at the presidential box. The Washington Post likewise reported boos followed by competing cheers and “U.S.A.!” chants as they took their seats.
AP also reported a further reaction during intermission: someone cursed Trump’s name near its end, drawing applause. The report said several drag queens attended as a protest against Trump’s previous complaints about drag shows at the Kennedy Center.

How the White House account differed
In an account published June 12, 2025, the White House said: “President Trump and the First Lady received thunderous applause and chants of ‘USA’ as they entered the Presidential Box.” That official account highlighted applause and chants. AP and Reuters also reported boos, giving a fuller picture of the divided response.
Why Trump’s appearance drew added attention
The event came amid changes to the Kennedy Center’s leadership. The Associated Press reported that after returning to office in January 2025, Trump fired the center’s longtime director and board, and the replacement board named him chairman. AP described the Les Misérables appearance as Trump’s first time attending a show at the center since his election.

What Trump said about the event and fundraising
In remarks to reporters before the performance, recorded in the Government Publishing Office transcript, Trump said: “It was great. We brought it back a long way.” He also said: “They raised, I just heard, over $10 million tonight to the center itself.” The transcript records Trump’s statement; it does not independently verify the final fundraising total.

Les Misérables is based on Victor Hugo’s 1862 novel, as The Washington Post noted in its coverage. The performance was the musical’s Kennedy Center opening night—not a documentary screening.
