Donald Trump appears nude behind a lectern on Barry Blitt’s satirical New Yorker cover “Exposed.” The illustration, on the issue dated March 26, 2018, was intended to address Trump’s contentious relationship with the press—not to depict a real event.

What the “Exposed” cover shows

Blitt’s image places Trump, unclothed, at a lectern in a press-conference setting. The official issue archive identifies the March 26, 2018 cover as “Exposed,” by Barry Blitt. It is political satire: the nudity is a visual device, not a documentary photograph.

Why Blitt depicted Trump naked

Blitt described his purpose plainly: “I wanted to address President Trump’s stormy relationship with the press.” In her March 16, 2018 cover-story article, art editor Françoise Mouly situates the illustration amid the political spectacle surrounding Trump and the press. The article appeared ten days before the issue date; those are separate publication dates.

The image’s point is exposure in a figurative sense: it casts the president as vulnerable and publicly scrutinized in the setting of a press briefing. That reading follows the artist’s stated intention, rather than establishing one definitive interpretation for every viewer. Mouly also notes this was Blitt’s fifteenth Trump cover at the time.

How the cover was made

Mouly describes Blitt’s regular process of submitting sketches, with an idea selected from the group and developed into the finished watercolor illustration. That process shaped a recurring New Yorker cover into a timely political image, rather than a literal scene.
