In “Wait, We’re Leaving?”, the season-five finale of Doubling Down with the Derricos, Deon and Karen move their family into a new home in Las Vegas. The episode, which aired July 2, 2024, centers on the children’s feelings about leaving their old house, while eldest daughter Darian celebrates high-school graduation and takes a step toward music work.
Which move do Deon and Karen make in the finale?
The family moves into a new Las Vegas residence. This is not the proposed move to South Carolina that Karen discussed in a 2022 interview. At that time, she said she wanted the children to be closer to her relatives and to know their cousins, aunts, and uncles; Deon was hesitant about the idea. The finale’s move is a separate storyline: the family leaves its old home for another home in Las Vegas. Us Weekly’s July 2, 2024 recap; Blavity / Shadow and Act’s April 4, 2022 interview.
The children say goodbye to the old house
Before the move, Deon and Karen talk with the children about the memories they made in their old home. The youngest children struggle with the news that they will not be returning. That reaction gives the move its emotional weight: the family is not only changing addresses, but leaving a familiar place behind.
In a confessional transcribed by Us Weekly, Deon says, “I think it’s just starting to set in with our children that once we move into the new house, we won’t be coming back to this old one.” He adds, “And it’s important for our children to understand that change is a part of life. We’re constantly having [to] change.”
