After the 1987 Gary Hart scandal, Donna Rice Hughes built a public career focused on internet safety. She became an advocate, speaker, media commentator, producer and author, and her official biography identifies her as president and CEO of Enough Is Enough. In a 2018 interview, she said the scandal’s media attention still hurt decades later—and that she had tried to turn that pain toward preventing harm to others.

How Rice Hughes described the scandal’s lasting impact

The controversy surrounding then-presidential candidate Gary Hart and Donna Rice dominated headlines in 1987. Looking back in a 2018 interview with ABC News, Rice Hughes said the media firestorm continued to cause pain decades later. She also said that the film The Front Runner, which revisited the episode, brought old feelings back.

Rice Hughes told ABC News that Hart contacted her years afterward and apologized; she said she had forgiven him long before. She described how she made meaning of the experience this way: “I used all that pain and suffering to try and prevent some of those things from happening to someone else.” That is her account of how she channelled the experience, not a complete explanation of every influence on her later career.

Her work shifted toward internet safety

Rice Hughes began working with Enough Is Enough in 1994, according to her official biography, which identifies her as the organization’s president and CEO. Enough Is Enough describes its mission as protecting children from online dangers. Rice Hughes’s advocacy has addressed online pornography, sexual predators, cyberbullying, sexting, social media and other internet-related risks. A 2024 interview also discusses her leadership and the organization’s child-safety mission.

The role made her a public voice on a different subject from the scandal that had first made her widely known. Her official biography describes her work as an internet-safety advocate, speaker and media commentator, as well as a filmmaker and producer. A shift in subject does not mean the earlier story disappeared: in 2018, she was still speaking publicly about its emotional and media aftermath.

Books and education projects

Rice Hughes has written about online safety and pornography. Her official biography lists these books:

  • Kids Online: Protecting Your Children in Cyberspace, published by Baker Books in 1998.
  • The Internet Pornography Pandemic (2014).

Her work has also included Internet Safety 101, an educational curriculum described in her biography as a resource for parents, educators and caregivers seeking to understand children’s online safety. An Enough Is Enough press kit describes the program and a television adaptation. These sources present the organization’s own descriptions of its projects; they do not independently establish the program’s reach or impact.

What her story does—and does not—establish

Rice Hughes’s account connects the painful public experience of 1987 with her stated desire to prevent harm to others. Her documented public work, however, spans advocacy, education, writing, speaking and media production. The available accounts support that connection as she describes it, but not a claim that the scandal alone caused her later career or that it marked a simple turning point in her private life.
