No: the claim that Wordle would run out of answers in October 2027 was a projection based on the game’s original, finite answer schedule—not a confirmed end date for the New York Times’ current game. Since taking over Wordle, the Times has curated and changed scheduled answers. The exact size of today’s answer pool is not established by the available sources.
Why did people think Wordle would run out?
In early 2022, Wordle’s original answer schedule was understood to be a finite list, with one answer used each day. Ars Technica calculated that the schedule could last until October 2027. That date was a projection based on the list and expected daily cadence at the time, not an announced shutdown date—and it does not establish when the current Times-run game will run out. Ars Technica’s 2022 reporting also distinguished the game’s possible answers from its much larger set of accepted guesses.
Accepted guesses aren’t the same as possible answers
Wordle has two relevant word sets: words the game will accept as guesses, and words eligible to be the daily solution. In its 2022 reporting, Ars Technica described nearly 13,000 valid guesses and about 2,300 possible answers. Those are approximate historical figures, not current counts, and they measure different things. A word can be accepted as a guess without ever being selected as an answer.
The smaller answer list was deliberate. Wordle creator Josh Wardle told TechCrunch that he filtered solutions partly to avoid obscure words that could make the game feel unfair, with Palak Shah helping with selection. Wardle explained: “A big one for me was if there were a bunch of five-letter words you’ve never heard of, and if the solution was one of those words, I think that feels bad for people.” Read the TechCrunch interview.

What changed after the Times took over?
The October 2027 estimate described the original schedule. The Times’ later approach made the answer pool subject to editorial curation, so the old countdown can’t be treated as a reliable forecast for the current game.
Editors curate the answer pool
In November 2022, coverage identified Tracy Bennett as Wordle editor and described the Times’ answers as curated. The reported editorial aim was to choose words that are “fun, accessible, lively and varied.” The same coverage noted that some plural forms could remain accepted guesses without being eligible answers. Scheduled answers can be changed
In May 2022, the Times removed FETUS as a scheduled answer and substituted SHINE following the leak of a draft Supreme Court opinion that would overturn Roe v. Wade. The change illustrates that an individual scheduled answer could be edited; it does not reveal the present size of the pool. TechCrunch covered the substitution.

The available reporting does not establish an authoritative current count of eligible answers. The historical figures—about 2,300 possible answers and nearly 13,000 accepted guesses—should not be presented as the live totals. Nor can the original schedule’s October 2027 projection be carried forward as a current endpoint after the Times’ editorial changes.

A precise “answers remaining” figure would need a current, dated source and a clear definition of the pool being counted. Without that, the sound conclusion is narrower: the old estimate described Wordle’s original finite schedule, while the current Times-run answer pool is curated and its exact size is unknown from the available sources.
