Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteVie is Doja Cat’s fifth studio album, released September 26, 2025: a 15-track return to pop after Scarlet, dressed in retro synths, punchy drums and romantic theatrics. Its best moments make that stylization feel playful and vivid; elsewhere, the period cues and 15-song scope can leave the record feeling less distinctive than its concept.
What does Vie sound like?
Doja Cat frames Vie around love, sex, romance, pain and wonder, including relationships with other people and with oneself. The title combines the French word for “life” with the Roman numeral V, a reference to this being her fifth album. As she explained in the Sony Music Canada release announcement, “I wanted to give my own personal modern twist” to homages to the 1980s, 1970s and 1990s.
The result is a pop-forward record with an especially pronounced 1980s sheen. Apple Music describes skittering drum machines, punchy bass and occasional saxophone, while the Recording Academy characterizes it as a mix of pop, disco, rap and R&B. Those are useful signposts, but the songs’ individual personalities matter more than the era references alone.
Do the throwback details make the songs stand out?
“Cards” and “Jealous Type” set the scene
“Cards” and “Jealous Type” announce the album’s sound with synths and crisp, punchy snares. The Associated Press review calls both distinctly 1980s in their production. “Jealous Type” pushes toward new jack swing, as Apple Music notes, giving the familiar palette a sharper rhythmic identity. These tracks establish the record’s mood quickly, though their references are also so legible that the retro frame can sometimes feel like a template rather than a fresh discovery.

“AAAHH MEN!” turns style into performance
“AAAHH MEN!” is a more convincing use of the album’s theatrical streak. The AP singles out its intense instrumentation and Doja’s vocal shifts; Apple Music hears a Queen-like quality in it. Here, the heightened arrangement gives her changes in delivery room to become part of the song’s character instead of merely switching between singing and rapping.
“Take Me Dancing” brings SZA into the mix
“Take Me Dancing,” featuring SZA, offers a different point of interest: the collaboration adds another vocal presence to a project built around shifting pop and R&B modes. Jack Antonoff is a prominent collaborator; Apple Music describes him as a first-time collaborator with Doja Cat, while Pitchfork says he has production credits on nine songs and instrument or recording credits on nearly every track. Pitchfork hears punched drums, synths, film samples and saxophone, but argues that the period fidelity can make Doja’s singing and rapping feel too separated.

Is the 15-track album consistent?
No single critical response settles that question, and the reviews identify both memorable experiments and weaker stretches. AP reviewer Kiana Doyle finds the album’s experimentation enjoyable more often than not, praising “All Mine” for its Prince-reminiscent feel while describing “Couples Therapy” and “Acts of Service” as its blandest offerings. That specific contrast captures the album’s unevenness better than a blanket verdict: its stylized production can spark a song, but does not guarantee one will land.
Pitchfork’s reservation is less about a few weaker tracks than about the limits of the overall pastiche. In its view, the retro sound can constrain the record, particularly when the vocal and rap passages seem too distinct from one another. That is a critical interpretation, not a consensus, but it points to a real tension in the album’s design: a carefully maintained period palette gives Vie a coherent surface while sometimes narrowing the space for surprise.

How does Vie compare with Scarlet?
The useful comparison is emphasis, not a claim that one album is objectively better. Vie is more pop-oriented and explicitly built around romance and retro production; contemporary critical commentary positions Scarlet as the sharper point of contrast. Listeners who value fluid shifts between rapping and singing, and a less prescribed sound, may find Vie less instinctive. Those who want Doja Cat in a more theatrical, melodic mode may welcome the change.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who should listen to Vie?
Vie is a good fit for listeners drawn to campy romantic pop-rap, prominent synths and an album that treats its throwback references as part of the performance. It is less persuasive if you want every track to push beyond its influences or if the divide between sung and rapped passages is a sticking point. The 15-song sequence has enough variety to reward listeners interested in Doja Cat’s pop range, but its weaker tracks make it more of a selective recommendation than an unqualified success.
