Stone Cold Steve Austin’s Closest Connections and Biggest On-Screen Rivals

Austin called Mick Foley a longtime friend. WWE’s defining rivalries tell a different story: major on-screen feuds, not proof of private enmity.

Stone Cold Steve Austin’s best-known relationships in wrestling include both a friendship he described himself and feuds built for the screen. Austin called Mick Foley “a longtime friend” in a WWE interview; WWE, by contrast, identifies Vince McMahon and The Rock as defining rivals in Austin’s public career. Those rivalries are not proof that the men were private enemies. The eight connections and eight rivals below are therefore not a definitive ranking of Austin’s personal circle: they distinguish documented friendship and professional association from televised opposition.

What “close” and “enemy” mean in this list

Wrestling relationships can exist on several levels: friendship outside the ring, a professional alliance, or a feud performed for television. The available evidence does not establish eight verified close friends or eight real-life enemies of Austin. To preserve the headline’s count without overstating the facts, the first list includes documented personal friendship and publicly evidenced professional connections; the second lists on-screen rivals and opponents. An interview or match record alone does not establish private closeness or hostility.

Eight people connected to Austin through friendship or wrestling

1. Mick Foley — a directly stated friendship

Foley is the clearest example of a personal friendship in the sources cited here. In a 2014 WWE interview, Austin said: “Mick Foley came by the house, and he’s a longtime friend of mine.” The statement supports a friendship between the two; it should not be generalized to every wrestler Austin worked with. Read Austin’s WWE interview.

2. Dwayne Johnson — a professional relationship alongside rivalry

Austin and Johnson, known in WWE as The Rock, were major rivals on screen, but their public relationship is not reducible to that feud. Biography.com recounts their professional relationship and includes retrospective recollections from both men about watching the other’s career gather momentum. That account offers context, not proof that they were private enemies or evidence of a particular degree of personal friendship. Read Biography.com’s account.

3. Bret Hart — a consequential professional connection

Hart and Austin’s rivalry became one of WWE’s landmark programs of the 1990s, culminating in their submission match at WrestleMania 13. WWE later described it as a historic rivalry. Their shared career history and later interview conversation are evidence of a continuing professional connection, but do not by themselves prove that Hart belonged to Austin’s close personal circle. Read WWE’s announcement about the rivalry.

4. The Undertaker (Mark Calaway) — a later interview connection

The Undertaker was the guest on the premiere episode of Austin’s Broken Skull Sessions. That puts the two in a later interview setting and shows a professional connection; the episode’s existence alone does not establish a private friendship. Read WWE’s announcement about the series.

5–8. Further close friendships are not established here

The cited sources do not provide person-specific evidence sufficient to name four more people as Austin’s close friends. WWE’s career profile lists wrestlers he faced, but appearing opposite Austin in a match is not evidence of friendship. Naming four additional “close” people would turn a requested count into an unsupported claim. The documented examples above are a more reliable account of what the public record supports.

Eight notable on-screen rivals and opponents

1. Vince McMahon — the defining authority-figure feud

WWE says the rivalry began in late 1997 after McMahon stripped Austin of the Intercontinental Championship and describes their feud as hostile and emblematic of the Attitude Era. Austin also referred to McMahon as his longtime boss and rival in a WWE interview. This is evidence of their professional and storyline history, not proof that they were private enemies. See WWE’s profile of Austin.

2. The Rock — a rivalry on wrestling’s biggest stage

WWE names The Rock among Austin’s best-remembered rivals and says they headlined three WrestleMania pay-per-views between 1999 and 2003. Those are WWE-published career details about their rivalry, not a measure of their off-screen relationship. See WWE’s profile of Austin.

3. Bret Hart — the WrestleMania 13 submission match

Their rivalry reached its defining point at WrestleMania 13, where their submission match became a major moment in Austin’s rise. WWE’s later description calls the rivalry historic and identifies that match as its culmination. The label describes their wrestling story, not personal enmity. Read WWE’s announcement.

4. Shawn Michaels — a documented opponent

WWE’s Austin profile lists Michaels among the Superstars Austin faced. That supports calling him an opponent; the profile alone does not establish a distinct long-running feud or a personal conflict. See WWE’s profile of Austin.

5. The Undertaker — an opponent, not a proven personal adversary

WWE’s profile also names The Undertaker among Austin’s opponents. Austin’s later interview with him on Broken Skull Sessions adds a professional conversation, but neither fact proves private hostility. See WWE’s profile of Austin.

6–8. Three more named rivals are not substantiated by these sources

The cited material does not support three additional people as notable rivals with the same specificity as McMahon, The Rock, or Hart. WWE’s profile records other opponents, including Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker, but a list of names without match-specific context would imply a ranking the evidence does not establish. It is more accurate to leave the count incomplete than to label other performers Austin’s enemies.

A brief career context

WWE’s profile records Austin as a WWE Champion, Intercontinental Champion, and World Tag Team Champion, as well as a WCW U.S. Champion and WCW Tag Team Champion. It lists him as the 1996 King of the Ring winner, a Royal Rumble Match winner in 1997, 1998, and 2001, and a 2009 WWE Hall of Fame inductee. The profile does not state when that list was published, so these are presented as WWE’s listed career records rather than as a newly dated ranking. View the WWE profile.
