The 2025 Snow White remake drew criticism for several different reasons: Rachel Zegler’s casting, her comments about the 1937 film, Disney’s approach to the seven magical characters, and political statements associated with the film’s stars. Those disputes overlapped in public debate, but they were not one unified backlash—and the available box-office figures do not establish that controversy caused the film’s performance.
What changed between the 1937 film and the remake?
Disney describes its 2025 movie as a live-action musical reimagining of its 1937 animated feature. Directed by Marc Webb and starring Rachel Zegler, Andrew Burnap and Gal Gadot, it was released on March 21, 2025, with a PG rating and a runtime of 1 hour 49 minutes, according to Disney’s film page.
The original, released on December 21, 1937, was Disney’s first feature-length animated film. Its familiar story includes Snow White, the Queen, the forest, the dwarfs and a prince’s kiss, as Disney’s catalog entry describes. Criticism of the old film’s romance or gender politics is not the same as rejecting the entire story.
Why did Rachel Zegler’s casting prompt objections?
Zegler, an American actor of Colombian descent, was cast as Snow White. Contemporary coverage described online objections and boycott calls centered on her Latina heritage and on how the remake would handle a character traditionally associated with the phrase “skin as white as snow.” These reactions did not all come from the same people or necessarily reflect the same motive; reporting on the dispute should not be mistaken for evidence that every critic objected for the same reason. The Guardian’s account covers the casting debate and the broader controversy.

What did Zegler say about the original?
The Guardian reported that Zegler criticized the 1937 film’s gender politics and romance. She called it “extremely dated” in its ideas about women and said its love story focused on a man who “literally stalks” Snow White. Those are short quotations as reported by the newspaper, not a complete transcript of her interview; they describe criticism of specific story elements, rather than proving she rejected the original in its entirety.
That criticism became part of a wider argument about what a modern adaptation should preserve, revise or leave behind. Some viewers welcomed reconsidering the old film’s portrayal of women; others objected to the tone of the remarks or to changes they perceived in the remake. These are interpretations and reactions, not additional statements by Zegler.

Why were the seven magical characters another point of dispute?
The remake’s treatment of the seven characters raised questions about dwarfism, representation and fidelity to the animated film. Variety reported Disney’s explanation: “To avoid reinforcing stereotypes from the original animated film, we are taking a different approach with these seven characters and have been consulting with members of the dwarfism community.” That is the studio’s stated rationale, as quoted by Variety; the statement alone does not resolve whether the final approach satisfied viewers or people concerned with representation.
How did politics enter the conversation?
Coverage also connected public political statements by Zegler and Gadot, including discussion related to Israel and Gaza, to the film’s reception. Their differing public positions became part of the way the movie was framed, but a family film’s cast is not a single political voice. Criticism of a government, concern for civilians, a performer’s political statement and criticism of an adaptation are distinct issues; they should not be collapsed into one claim about what every viewer believed.

The Guardian reported that after the 2024 U.S. election, Zegler posted that she hoped Donald Trump and his supporters would “never know peace,” and later apologized. The post and apology belong to that election-related sequence, not to a statement about Snow White. The original post was not separately verified here, so the account is attributed to the newspaper.

The Associated Press reported the following figures around the film’s March 2025 opening. They are contemporaneous measures, not a current cumulative total or a causal explanation for audience decisions.
| Measure | What AP reported | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Domestic opening | $43 million | Opening-weekend domestic box office reported by AP in March 2025. |
| Production budget | Above $250 million | AP’s reported budget figure; it is not a complete accounting of marketing, distribution or eventual revenue. |
| Rotten Tomatoes freshness | 43% | AP’s reported figure at the time of its March 2025 coverage; review scores can change. |
| CinemaScore | B+ | AP’s reported audience-grade snapshot around opening, not a survey of every viewer. |
AP also described critical reception as poor at that point and discussed the surrounding controversies and the film’s handling of the seven characters. That establishes context, not proof that controversy alone caused the opening result. Reviews, release timing, marketing, production costs and audience interest are among the other factors that can affect a film’s commercial performance. The figures do not support the claim that Zegler alone caused the result. Read the Associated Press report.
